The Brown Family

First Generation

1.  George Brown13 was born on 18 May 1592 in Easton Royal, Wiltshire, England.1,4 He died on 22 Aug 1633–8 Nov 1633 at the age of 41 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1,5 George Brown(e) was born at Easton Royal, Wiltshire, England in 1592 to George Browne and Jone Threeder. By trade, George was a brewer. He married Christian Hibbert at St. Edmunds Church in Salisbury, Wiltshire on 30 September 1611.

Marie Abbott, widow, in her will dated 9 January 1618/9, left a legacy of two shillings each to Richard, Daniel and George Browne. She also mentioned her grandchildren Dove.

In his 1633 will, George Browne, of Sarum, Wiltshire, appointed Mr. John Dove and Mr. Francis Dove overseers of his will. He named his wife Christian and sons Henry, William, George and Abraham.

The exact relationship btween the Brownes, Abbotts and Doves has yet to be established.

Francis Dove, twice mayor of Salisbury, was a warden of St. Edmund's, where George and his family attended. St. Edmund's was a Puritan stronghold and a number of its parishioners, along with the Brownes, opted to go to New England.

George Browne died betwee 22 August and 8 November 1633. Christian made the decision to go ahead and make the trip with her sons to New England.
George Brown and Christian Hibbert were married on 30 Sep 1611 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1 Christian Hibbert1,3 was born circa 1590 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1 She died on 28 Dec 1641 at the age of 51 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.1,3 There are two possible couples for Christian Hibbert's parents: (1) Henry Hibbert [1548-1618] and Barbara Kinge [1552-????] and (2) Edward Hibbert and Jane Dyer.

Following her husband's death, Christian decided to stick with family plans to immigrate to New England. Along with sons Henry, William, George and Abraham, the widow Browne settled in Colchester, Massachusetts Bay in 1639. Christian was the only woman to receive land in the first division in 1640. The Brownes were instrumental in renaming the town Salisbury, in honor of their hometown in Wiltshire, England. Christian died on 28 December 1641 in Salisbury. Her lot went to eldest son, Henry.

George Brown and Christian Hibbert had the following children:

2.  Henry Brown3 (George-1) was born circa 1613–1615 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.6 He died on 6 Aug 1701 at the age of 88 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6 Henry Brown arrived in Massachusetts Bay by 1639 with his mother and brothers, George and William. They were among the proprietors at Salisbury.
Henry received land in 1640, 1641 and 1642.

Brown married about 1641 to Abigail ________.  Seven children were born to the couple.

He was made a freeman in 1649. Brown was taxed as a commoner in 1650. Henry's name appeared on a list of members of the Salisbury Church in 1677. He and Abigail were named as church members in 1687.

Henry Brown died 6 August 1701. Abigail died a year later on 23 August 1702.
Henry Brown and Abigail [Brown]3 were married circa 1641 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6 Abigail [Brown]6 was born circa 1617 in England.6 She died on 23 Aug 1702 at the age of 85 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6

3.  William Brown2 (George-1) was born circa 23 Nov 1615 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He died on 24 Aug 1706 at the age of 90 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America. William Brown was the second son of George and Christian Brown. He received land in Salisbury in 1642. Brown was taxed in 1652. William was dismissed from training in April of 1666.

There is a discrepency in the date of William's marriage to Elizabeth Murford. 25 June 1645 and 11 August 1646 are given. The latter is probably accurate as the former was the date of his brother George's marriage.

About 1660, William accused Susanna Martin of being a witch and causing the insanity of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth's condition lasted over 30 years. Susanna was arrested and imprisoned. The charges were later dismissed. This was the second accusation against Mrs. Martin. The 1st had also been dismissed. Witchcraft charges would face Susanna again in 1692. William testified against her again.

He decribed Elizabeth's claims of how Mrs. Martin would appear, threaten and torment her. Elizabeth suffered a kind of distemper and frenzy and was incapable of rational behavior, although she was physically healthy. Doctors examined Mrs. Brown and concurred that her distemper was supernatural in origin; that she had been bewitched. Susanna was founf guilty of witchcraft.
She was hanged along with Rebecca Nurse and others on 19 July 1692.

Elizabeth died in 1693 and William on 24 August 1706.

William Brown and Elizabeth Murford were married. Elizabeth Murford was born circa 1620 in England. She died in 1693 at the age of 73 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

He received land in Salisbury in 1642, which he sold in 1645 in preparation for a move to Haverhill.

George Brown married twice. First to Ann Eaton in 1645 and second to Hannah [Grant] Hazen in 1683/4. Brown fathered no children, but did adopt Richard Hazen, the son of his 2nd wife.

Brown served as representative from Haverfield in 1672, 1675, 1680 and 1692. He was a soldier in King Philip's War, serving under Captain Gilman from June - August 1676.

George made his will on 26 June 1699. He passed on 31 October and the will was proved on 6 November 1699.
George Browne and Ann Easton were married on 25 Jun 1645 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America. Ann Easton was born circa 1621 in probably England. She died on 16 Dec 1683 at the age of 62 in Haverhill?, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

He was a highway surveyor that year and again in 1683-84. Greeley was appointed constable on 7 January 1678/9. He and Benjamin Stevens were ordered to clear the great neck, leading from the beach shore, of cattle on 13 March.

Andrew received nine acres in Lot #25 at the division of land on 18 May 1681.

Greeley and Henry Ambrose were involved in a tax dispute with New Hampshire from 31 July 1699 to September 1700. The colonies of New Hampshire and Massachusetts had not yet settled their boundary. Both men had paid their taxes in Massachusetts and were being assessed by New Hampshire as well. Needless to say, Greeley and Abrose refused to pay duplicate taxes and were imprisoned. Both were released after posting bond.
