The Brown Family

First Generation

1.  George Brown13 was born on 18 May 1592 in Easton Royal, Wiltshire, England.1,4 He died on 22 Aug 1633–8 Nov 1633 at the age of 41 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1,5 George Brown(e) was born at Easton Royal, Wiltshire, England in 1592 to George Browne and Jone Threeder. By trade, George was a brewer. He married Christian Hibbert at St. Edmunds Church in Salisbury, Wiltshire on 30 September 1611.

Marie Abbott, widow, in her will dated 9 January 1618/9, left a legacy of two shillings each to Richard, Daniel and George Browne. She also mentioned her grandchildren Dove.

In his 1633 will, George Browne, of Sarum, Wiltshire, appointed Mr. John Dove and Mr. Francis Dove overseers of his will. He named his wife Christian and sons Henry, William, George and Abraham.

The exact relationship btween the Brownes, Abbotts and Doves has yet to be established.

Francis Dove, twice mayor of Salisbury, was a warden of St. Edmund's, where George and his family attended. St. Edmund's was a Puritan stronghold and a number of its parishioners, along with the Brownes, opted to go to New England.

George Browne died betwee 22 August and 8 November 1633. Christian made the decision to go ahead and make the trip with her sons to New England.
George Brown and Christian Hibbert were married on 30 Sep 1611 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1 Christian Hibbert1,3 was born circa 1590 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.1 She died on 28 Dec 1641 at the age of 51 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.1,3 There are two possible couples for Christian Hibbert's parents: (1) Henry Hibbert [1548-1618] and Barbara Kinge [1552-????] and (2) Edward Hibbert and Jane Dyer.

Following her husband's death, Christian decided to stick with family plans to immigrate to New England. Along with sons Henry, William, George and Abraham, the widow Browne settled in Colchester, Massachusetts Bay in 1639. Christian was the only woman to receive land in the first division in 1640. The Brownes were instrumental in renaming the town Salisbury, in honor of their hometown in Wiltshire, England. Christian died on 28 December 1641 in Salisbury. Her lot went to eldest son, Henry.

George Brown and Christian Hibbert had the following children:

2 i. Henry Brown, born ca 1613–1615, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England; married Abigail [Brown], ca 1641, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America; died 6 Aug 1701, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.
3 ii. William Brown, born ca 23 Nov 1615, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England; married Elizabeth Murford; died 24 Aug 1706, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.
4 iii. George Browne, born 29 Aug 1622, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England; married Ann Easton, 25 Jun 1645, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America; married Hannah Grant, 17 Mar 1683/4, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts; died 31 Oct 1699, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
iv. Abraham Brown was born on 22 Aug 1626 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He died in 1680 at the age of 54 in Plymouth, Devonshire, England. Abraham was the youngest of the Brown children. He apparently returned to England, where he died in 1680 in Plymouth.

Second Generation

2.  Henry Brown3 (George-1) was born circa 1613–1615 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.6 He died on 6 Aug 1701 at the age of 88 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6 Henry Brown arrived in Massachusetts Bay by 1639 with his mother and brothers, George and William. They were among the proprietors at Salisbury.
Henry received land in 1640, 1641 and 1642.

Brown married about 1641 to Abigail ________.  Seven children were born to the couple.

He was made a freeman in 1649. Brown was taxed as a commoner in 1650. Henry's name appeared on a list of members of the Salisbury Church in 1677. He and Abigail were named as church members in 1687.

Henry Brown died 6 August 1701. Abigail died a year later on 23 August 1702.
Henry Brown and Abigail [Brown]3 were married circa 1641 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6 Abigail [Brown]6 was born circa 1617 in England.6 She died on 23 Aug 1702 at the age of 85 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.6

Henry Brown and Abigail [Brown] had the following children:

i. Abigail Brown3 was born on 23 Feb 1643/4 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3
ii. Jonathan Brown3 was born on 25 Nov 1646 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3 Jonathan probably died young.
iii. Philip Brown3 was born circa Dec 1648 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3 He died on 21 Jul 1729 at the age of 80 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3
iv. Abraham Brown3 was born on 1 Jan 1649/50 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3 He died on 26 Mar 1733 at the age of 83 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3
5 v. Sarah Brown, born 6 Dec 1654, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America; married Andrew Greele/Greeley Jr., 12 Jun 1673, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America; died 23 Jun 1727, Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.
vi. Henry Brown3 was born on 8 Feb 1658/9 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3 He died on 25 Apr 1708 at the age of 49 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3
vii. Nathaniel Brown3 died on 5 Oct 1723 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.3 He was born 30 jun 1642/3 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts, British North America.3

3.  William Brown2 (George-1) was born circa 23 Nov 1615 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. He died on 24 Aug 1706 at the age of 90 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America. William Brown was the second son of George and Christian Brown. He received land in Salisbury in 1642. Brown was taxed in 1652. William was dismissed from training in April of 1666.

There is a discrepency in the date of William's marriage to Elizabeth Murford. 25 June 1645 and 11 August 1646 are given. The latter is probably accurate as the former was the date of his brother George's marriage.

About 1660, William accused Susanna Martin of being a witch and causing the insanity of his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth's condition lasted over 30 years. Susanna was arrested and imprisoned. The charges were later dismissed. This was the second accusation against Mrs. Martin. The 1st had also been dismissed. Witchcraft charges would face Susanna again in 1692. William testified against her again.

He decribed Elizabeth's claims of how Mrs. Martin would appear, threaten and torment her. Elizabeth suffered a kind of distemper and frenzy and was incapable of rational behavior, although she was physically healthy. Doctors examined Mrs. Brown and concurred that her distemper was supernatural in origin; that she had been bewitched. Susanna was founf guilty of witchcraft.
She was hanged along with Rebecca Nurse and others on 19 July 1692.

Elizabeth died in 1693 and William on 24 August 1706.

William Brown and Elizabeth Murford were married. Elizabeth Murford was born circa 1620 in England. She died in 1693 at the age of 73 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

4.  George Browne (George-1) was born on 29 Aug 1622 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.78 He died on 31 Oct 1699 at the age of 77 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.78 George arrived in Salisbury with his mother and brothers about 1638. He received land in Salisbury in 1642, which he sold in 1645 in preparation for a move to Haverhill.

George Brown married twice. First to Ann Eaton in 1645 and second to Hannah [Grant] Hazen in 1683/4. Brown fathered no children, but did adopt Richard Hazen, the son of his 2nd wife.

Brown served as representative from Haverfield in 1672, 1675, 1680 and 1692. He was a soldier in King Philip's War, serving under Captain Gilman from June - August 1676.

George made his will on 26 June 1699. He passed on 31 October and the will was proved on 6 November 1699.
George Browne and Ann Easton were married on 25 Jun 1645 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America. Ann Easton was born circa 1621 in probably England. She died on 16 Dec 1683 at the age of 62 in Haverhill?, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

George Browne and Hannah Grant were married on 17 Mar 1683/4 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.89 Hannah Grant, daughter of Thomas Grant and Jane Haburne, was born about 1631 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England. [based on baptismal date] She was baptized on 16 Oct 1631 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England.810 She died in Feb 1715/6 at the age of 85 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.8 Hannah was also known as Hannah Hazen.912

Third Generation

5.  Sarah Brown (Henry-2, George-1) was born on 6 Dec 1654 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.13 She died on 23 Jun 1727 at the age of 72 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.13
Sarah Brown and Andrew Greele/Greeley Jr. were married on 12 Jun 1673 in Salisbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.13 Andrew Greele/Greeley Jr.13, son of Andrew Greele/Greeley and Mary Moyce / Moyse, was born on 10 Dec 1646 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13 He died on 26 Nov 1736 at the age of 89 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13 Andrew Greeley took the oath of allegiance and fidelity before the military commander of Salisbury, Captain Bradbury, on 17 December 1677. He was a highway surveyor that year and again in 1683-84. Greeley was appointed constable on 7 January 1678/9. He and Benjamin Stevens were ordered to clear the great neck, leading from the beach shore, of cattle on 13 March.

Andrew received nine acres in Lot #25 at the division of land on 18 May 1681.

Greeley and Henry Ambrose were involved in a tax dispute with New Hampshire from 31 July 1699 to September 1700. The colonies of New Hampshire and Massachusetts had not yet settled their boundary. Both men had paid their taxes in Massachusetts and were being assessed by New Hampshire as well. Needless to say, Greeley and Abrose refused to pay duplicate taxes and were imprisoned. Both were released after posting bond.

Andrew Greele/Greeley and Sarah Brown had the following children:

i. Andrew Greele/Greeley was born on 8 Oct 1674 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13 He died on 16 Nov 1693 at the age of 19 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13
ii. Henry Greele/Greeley was born on 28 Sep 1676 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13 He died on 16 Jan 1693/4 at the age of 17 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.13

The Moyce Family

First Generation

1.  Joseph Moyce / Moyse13 was born in 1585–1590 in Suffolk, England.23 He died after 1669 at the age of 84 in Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.23 Joseph Moyse or Moyce was probably born in Suffolk Co., England, between 1585 and 1590. He is believed to be the Joseph Moyce who married Anna / Hannah Folcord 2 November 1609.

Hannah's year of birth becomes an issue concerning the 1609 marriage. The majority of the IGI and PRF entries for her at FamilySearch give Hannah's birth in 1601. A handful sjow years ranging from 1587 to 1597. A birth range of 1589 to 1593 would be plasible if Hannah, the wife of Joseph Moyce, was Hannah Folcord.

In his will dated 9 November 1648, the Rev. Nicholas Stanton of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, left a legacy of 40 shillings to "Joseph Moyce or his wife, living in New England." The supposition is that either Joseph Moyse or Anna Folcord had some connection to Rev. Stanton.

The Moyses had three known children: Anna [baptized 16 September 1618 at Dennington, Suffolk], Martha [b. c1619] and Mary [b. c1622]. If Joseph did indeed marry Anna Folcord in 1609, there is a strong possibility that there were three or four children born before Anna.

Lending credibility to this idea is an entry in
Bradley of Essex County: early records from 1643 t0 1746: "Goodman Moyce and his three sons: 1648, Hav., Jan. 26." If Joseph and Hannah were married in 1609, they could easily have had three sons born between, say, 1611 and 1616.

Joseph was in Salisbury [originally Merrimac], Essex, Massachusetts Bay by 1639. The town granted him land in the first division in December 1640. Moyse was a joiner by trade. Joseph was a commoner and was taxed in 1651 and 1652 and received additional land in 1654. He served on the Grand Jury in 1651 and the Trial Jury in 1653.

Moyse left no will, but deeded land to grandsons Philip and Andrew Greeley. George Goldwyer and wife Martha deeded rights to land that he bought from his father-in-law, Joseph Moyse of Salisbury, in March 1674/5. Martha Pike mentioned her sister Greeley and cousin, Ephriam Winsley, Sr. in 1700.

No proof exists tying Hannah to Josephn and Anna. The rarity of the Moyse name and the fact that she named a son Joseph make her a likely daughter of the couple.

Hannah Moyce married Bartholomew Heath.
Martha Moyce married George Goldwyer & Mjr. Robert Price,
Mary Moyce married Andrew Greeley,

Anna died in 1655 in Salisbury. Joseph was still living in 1669.
Joseph Moyce / Moyse and Hannah Folcord / Folkard1,3 were married on 2 Nov 1609 in Dennington, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom.13 Hannah Folcord / Folkard3 was born in 1587–1593 in Suffolk, England.2 She died in 1655 at the age of 68 in Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.23

Joseph Moyce / Moyse and Hannah Folcord / Folkard had the following child:

2 i. Mary Moyce / Moyse, born ca 1622, Suffolk, England; married Andrew Greele/Greeley Sr., ca 1642, Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts; died 24 Dec 1703, Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

Second Generation

2.  Mary Moyce / Moyse3 (Joseph-1) was born circa 1622 in Suffolk, England.34 She died on 24 Dec 1703 at the age of 81 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1,3
Mary Moyce / Moyse and Andrew Greele/Greeley Sr.3 were married circa 1642 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1,3 Andrew Greele/Greeley Sr.1 was born circa 1617 in England [?].1 He died on 30 Jun 1697 at the age of 80 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1 Andrew Greele was probably born in England about 1617. His arrival in Massachusetts is not documented. The town of Merrimac was granted in 1638 as a plantation to Simon Bradstreet and others. The town was incorporated as Colchester in 1639 and renamed Salisbury in 1640.

By 1640 Andrew had settled in what is now Seabrook, New Hampshire and built a tide mill for the grinding of corn on Kane's River contiguous to a rock-bound island in the marsh where he built a sawmill in August 1655. The mill was passed down to Andrew Jr., then to his son Andrew, remaining in the family until 1747.

The Greele homestead consisted of about three acres and two sets of buildings. Three generations of Andrew Greele children were born there.  Andrew was chosen constable of Salisbury for 1654 and was active in local affairs. Shortly after the mill was completed, he moved to Haverhill.

Andrew Greele/Greeley and Mary Moyce / Moyse had the following children:

i. Phillip Greele/Greeley was born on 21 Sep 1644 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1
3 ii. Andrew Greele/Greeley Jr., born 10 Dec 1646, Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts; married Sarah Brown, 12 Jun 1673, Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts; died 26 Nov 1736, Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.
iii. Mary Greele/Greeley was born on 16 Jul 1649 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1
iv. Joseph Greele/Greeley was born on 5 Feb 1652 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1
v. Benjamin Greele/Greeley was born on 9 Dec 1654 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1
vi. Westwood Greele/Greeley1 was born 29 Mar 1658/9 in Salisbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.1 Westwood probably died young. Other than the birth record, there is no further mention of him.

The Pearce Family [Gen. 2-3]

Second Generation

2.  Daniel Pierce / Pearce Sr.1 (John-1) was born circa 1662 in Prudence Island, Rhode Island, British America.1 He died after 1744 at the age of 82 in North Kingstown, Kings, Rhode Island, British America.1 Daniel Pearce was the son of John and Mary Pearce. He was born about 1662. His birthplace is open to question. If his parents arrived in Rehoboth, Massachusetts in 1660 and then to Plymouth Colony in 1666, then Rehoboth was his probable birthplace. If his parents arrived after 1662, Daniel may have been born in Wales.

Daniel was made a freeman of Portsmouth on 6 June 1692. Pearce married twice. The identity of his first wife remains a mystery; the second was Elizabeth Tucker, whom he wed on 13 December 1703.

Daniel resided in Portsmouth until 1720, then relocated to North Kingson, where he took up permanent residence during the summer of 1723.

Pearce served as constable of Portsmouh in 1694, 1695 and 1697. He was deputy to the General Assembly from Portsmouth in 1698, 1701 to 1705, 1710, 1711, 1720, 1721, 1723 and 1731. Pearce served as justice of the peace in Portsmouth in 1707, 1708, 1711 and 1720. He was a grand juryman and deputy for Kingston in 1720. Daniel was a grand juryman and overseer of the poor in North Kingston in 1724.

In 1700, Daniel of Prudence Island bought 700 acres at Aquidnesitt from Benjamin and Jonathan Viall and John Thomas of Swanzey.

The Pearces conveyed by deed of gift to sons, Daniel Jr. and John of Portsmouth, in common, 400 acres of land at Aquidnesit in 1721.

On 8 July 1722, Peace sold a mulatto man named Ephraim Smith to his son and daughter.

On 17 March 1723, Daniel Pearce, Jr. and Patiece and John Pearce and Martha sold to their honored father, Daniel Pearce of Kingston, 400 acres conveyed to them in 1721.

He executed a free deed of gift to the town of North Kingston, land for a road that would run from Fones Bridge to the sea, for a public drift way on 11 August 1724.

Daniel and Elizabeth sold lands to sons Daniel and John of Prudence Island on 16 March 1726. On the 17th, Daniel and John gave a bond to brothers, Nathan and William, that they would give them part of their father's estate when they came of age.

On 13 November 1736, Daniel appeared before the town council of North Kingston and agreed to bring a certificate from Portsmouth concerning his daughter, Mary, and her two children [John Moss, Jr. and Joshua Moss.]

It is believed that Daniel Pearce died after 1744.
