21. James Morris Simmons14,23–29 (John William-6,
John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 23 Oct 1804 in Chenango
Co., New York.23,29–30 He died on 25 May 1883 at the
age of 78 in Camden, Carroll Co., Indiana.29 He was buried on 27 May 1883 in
Crown Point Cemetery [Section 4, Lot 53], Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana.25 James Morris Simmons was the eldest child of John W.
and Dolly [Jennison] Simmons. He grew up on the family farm near New Berlin in
Chenango Co., NY. The family had moved to Switzerland Co., Indiana by 1820, but
shortly thereafter moved to Ohio. James settleed in Warren Co., Ohio where he
married Hester Jane Moore on 26 October
1826.
The 1830 census for Butler Co., Ohio shows a James M. Simmons with 2 males under 5, 1 male 20-30, and 1 female 30-40. Among the neighbors are a John Simmons and several Moore families. James would have been about 25, Hester - 30, and John - 2. It is possible that they had a newborn son who did not survive to maturity.
A James M. Simmons appears on the 1840 Prebble Co., Ohio census with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50, and 1 female 50-60. By 1840, the Simmons boys would have been 12 and 3 and daughter Maria about 8. James would have been 35 and Hester 40. Allowing for a clerical error that placed James in the 20-30 column instead of 30-40, this could be the correct family. Jacob Simmons was supposedly born in Prebble Co. in November of 1840. The unidentified male from the 1830 census would have been 5-10 in 1840. That leaves the two females 15-20 and 50-60. Perhaps they were relatives of James or Hester; a widowed mother and younger sister.
James, Hester and the younger children have not been located in 1850. The eldest son John was married and living in Howard Co., Indiana in that year with his wife's relatives as neighbors. Both James and John are in Howard Co. in 1860. James' occupation as carpenter. James again disappears from the census records for 1870-80
Hester [Moore] Simmons died in May 1876, probably in Howard Co. and was buried in the family plot at Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo. James moved to Camden, Carroll Co., Indiana at some point, possibly at the same time that children Samuel and Maria moved there from Clinton Co., Indiana. James died there on 25 May 1883 and was buried in Kokomo.
The stone at Crown Point bears the inscription for son-in-law, Benjamin Curtis who died in 1866. Daughter Maria and other family members are interred there as well.

James Morris Simmons and Hester
Jane Moore were married on 26 Oct 1826 in Warren Co., Ohio.24 Hester Jane Moore was born about 1800 in North Carolina.31 She died about 16 May 1876 at
the age of 76 in Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana.25 She was buried on 16 May 1876
in Crown Point Cemetery [Section 4, Lot 53], Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana.25
James Morris Simmons and Hester Jane Moore had the
following children:
32 i. John T. Simmons, born 31 Jan 1828, probably Warren Co., Ohio; married Edith Crousore, 24 Jun
1849, Howard Co., Indiana; died 2 Aug 1909, Sharpsville,
Tipton Co., Indiana.
33 ii. Maria Simmons, born 11 Dec 1832,
probably Butler Co., Ohio;
married Benjamin Curtis, 24 Dec 1863, Howard Co., Indiana; died
17 Nov 1907, Camden, Carroll Co., Indiana.
34 iii. Samuel M. Simmons, born 24 Apr 1837,
Butler Co., Ohio;
married Sarah Parker, 8 Sep 1860, Howard Co., Indiana;
married Harriet Rule, 16 Jul 1885, Carroll Co., Indiana;
married Ines Whelan, 10 Apr 1880, Clinton Co., Indiana; died
14 May 1923, Camden, Carroll Co., Indiana.
35 iv. Jacob Nathaniel Simmons, born 20 Nov
1840, Preble Co., Ohio;
married Rebecca Matilda Rule, 9 Jun 1872, Howard Co., Indiana;
married Matilda Reeder, 12 Jun 1865, Howard Co., Indiana; died
21 May 1927, Chetek, Barron Co., Wisconsin.
22. Caroline
Simmons32 (John William-6, John-5, John-4,
John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 25 Aug 1806 in New Berlin, Chenango Co.,
New York.3,9
She died on 28 Sep 1884 at the age of 78 in Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky.32
She was buried on 29 Sep 1884 in Evergreen [Newport] Cemetery, Southgate,
Campbell Co., Kentucky.32 The Newport
[Evergreen] Cemetery listing for Caroline Garrison appears to be that of
Caroline Simmons Garrison. The stumbling block is the inscribed birth date of 6
August 1802. The date otherwise is recorded as 25 August 1806 and fits with her
age in the census records. Her death notice suggests a birth year of 1804.
The Kentucky State Journal for Tuesday, September 30, 1884 [p. 3] had a brief mention of Caroline's passing. Death of the aged: Joseph Hummewright, 80 years of age; Mrs. Caroline Garrison, 80 years; Mr. Caleb Broadwell, 70 years; Mrs. Ruth McDonald, 80 years. The first three died Sunday, the last one Saturday. It is seldom that four die so near one another whose total ages amount to 310 years.
Two entries in local city directories show a Caroline Garrison as a widow living at 52 Walnut in 1882 and at 39 Mayo, between York and Monmouth in 1884. [US City Directories 1882-1885: Williams' Covington & Newport Directories; Ancestry.com]

Caroline Simmons and John
Garrison were married on 25 Jan 1827 in Hamilton Co., Ohio.9,33
Bride's maiden name missing from record. John
Garrison9,34
was born about 1805 in New York or Pennsylvania.9
He died on 7 Jan 1875 at the age of 70 in Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky.34
He was buried on 9 Jan 1875 in Evergreen [Newport] Cemetery, Southgate,
Campbell Co., Kentucky.34 The Garrisons are
listed in the 1850 and 1860 census for Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky. In 1870
they were enumerated as "Carret." A search of the 1880 census has
thus far come up empty. A John Campbell, born in Pennsylvania, aged 71 died in
Newport on 7 January 1875 of heart disease. This would appear to be the correct
individual.
23. Mariah/Maria B.
Simmons9,35–36 (John William-6, John-5, John-4,
John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 4 Mar 1812 in New Berlin, Chenango Co.,
New York.9
She died on 25 Jul 1909 at the age of 97 in Bellevue, Campbell Co., Kentucky.9
She was buried on 28 Jul 1909 in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton
Co., Ohio.9 Mariah was the youngest of John's
and Dolly's two surviving daughters. She married John Anspaugh about 1834 in
Hamilton Co., Ohio. They had five children: Caroline Matilda [28 Feb 1835-20
Dec 1918], James L. [28 Sep 1836-2 May 1917], Anna Elizabeth [27 Nov 1848-23
Nov 1940] and two unidentified children probably born between 1837 and 1847.
The Anspaughs lived in Cincinnati into the 1870s, then moved across the Ohio River to Bellevue, CampbellCo., Kentucky where John died in 1878. Mariah died in Bellevue in 1909. Both were buried in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
Maria's death drew the attention of local newspapers on both sides of the Ohio River.
Cincinnati Enquirer (Kentucky Edition) 26 July 1909 [p. 7] Deaths: Maria B. Anspaugh (nee Simmons) relict of John Anspaugh at her residence. 425 Clark st., Bellevue, Ky., aged 97 years 4 months and 21 days. Due notice of funeral to be given.
Two additional obituaries from the Cincinnati Enquirer (Kentucky Edition) 26 July 1909 [p. 12] and the Commercial Tribune 26 July 1909 [p. 7] gave more detail on Maria. She died 25 July 1909 at the home of her daughter, Matilda Anspaugh, at 425 Clark Street in Bellevue. Maria [maiden name Simmons] was born in New Berlin, NY and moved with her family to Covington as a child. She married John Anspaugh in Covington, then moved to Cincinnati and resided at 3rd and Mill St.. The Anspaughs moved to Bellevue about 1871. John died there as well.
Maria was reputed to be the oldest resident of Bellevue at the time of her death. She often reminisced about how the territory that became Bellevue and Dayton was a wilderness with only a few farm huts. The local Indians that inhabited northern Campbell County often traded in Cincinnati.
During the Civil War, Maria was a member of the Sanitary Association which was formed to improve the sanitary conditions in the camps.
Son James who worked for Bradford Belting Co. was at his summer home in Michigan and was notified of his mother's death by telegraph. Also mentioned was daughter Elizabeth Boescher.
The Tuesday 27 July 1909 issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer (Kentucky Edition) [p. 2] gave notice of the funeral: Bellevue: Funeral of Mrs. M.B. Anspaugh will be held tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. from residence at 425 Clark St. Burial at Spring Grove.

1818 in New Berlin, Chenango Co., New York.3 She died on 10 Sep
1880 at the age of 61 in Jackson Twp., Cass Co., Indiana.42–43
Amelia A. Simmons, like so many of her family, resided in a number of
locations. The 1860 census gives her birthplace as Jefferson Co., Indiana. Her
first marriage took place in Campbell Co., Kentucky in 1836 to Charles William
Thomas. They moved to Clinton Co., Indiana where their six children were born.
Either Charles died in 1848, or the couple divorced.
She married Richard Humphrey in Clinton Co. in 1849. He was a widower with a son David [14 in 1860]. The couple settled to Cass Co. Amelia and Richard had four children.
Neither Amelia or Richard appeared in the 1880 census. An undocumented source gives Amelia's death as 10 September 1880. The same source gives Richard's date of death as 18 September 1876.

He died on 4 Feb 1897 at the age of 76 in East Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon.9,52
He was buried on 5 Feb 1897 at Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah
Co., Oregon.53 David was the
6th child of John and Dolly Simmons. He may hold the key to the surname of
John's mother. In both online family trees mentioning David, his middle name is
given as 'Pervost.' A footnote in the "Wall Street John" site
mentions that Price & Associates Inc. Reseach firm in Salt Lake City
suggested to client Roy Simmons that David's middle name was Prevost. [see the
notes on Mary Nelson/Prevost]
David married Sarah Ann Gross/Grose on 23 May 1839 in Henry Co., Indiana. Seven children were born in Indiana [Mary (c 1839), Harriet (c 1841), Sarah (c 1843), John (c 1845), Richard (c 1847), Adaline (c 1851), & Elmira (c 1853) and one each in Kentucky [Henry (c 1854)] and Wisconsin [Alice (c 1859)] . It appears that two sons, John and Richard, died between 1850-1860. The family moved from Henry Co., IN to Campbell Co., KY about 1849 [based on the birth of a son in Indiana], then to Richland Co., Wisconsin by 1858. Sarah died there in 1860.
Before 1870, David married a woman named Christine. They were living in Cuming Co., Nebraska that year. Daughter Adaline [Ada] was teaching school.
Oregon was the final stop for David. The family resided in Phiomath, Benton Co. in 1880. He died in Yamhill Co. in 1897. A conflicting source, citing David's obituary and report on his funeral, states that he died at his residence in Car Shops on the grounds of the Southern Pacific Railroad on 4 February 1897 and was buried in the Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. [A check of the cemetery's online site confirms David was buried in grave 1N, lot 3, section 34.]
2nd wife Christine lived with David's only surviving son, Henry, afterwards.

Daniel G. Simmons and Elizabeth Adeline Wirts had the
following child:
46 i. Alice M. Simmons, born Feb 1873,
Kentucky;
married Charles G. Lee, 12 Jun 1891, Daviess Co., Indiana.
28. Sylvanus
Simmons61–62
(John William-6, John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 16 Sep
1823 in Indiana.9,61
He died circa 4 May 1901 at the age of 77 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.63 rSylvanus's story is loaded with
conflicting information. Census records show a range of about 1824 to 1829 for
his year of birth. The Simmons Family research offers a birth date of 16
September 1823.* The burial records for Wesleyan Cemetery in Cincinnati give
his age at death as 76 [buried 4 May 1901]. This would place Sylvanus's birth
in 1823 or early 1824.
Sylvanus was an engineer [either designing or maintaining river boats] during most of his adult life in Ohio and Kentucky. While living in Henry Co., Indiana, he was a farmer.
On 18 November 1860, his mother, Dolly, wrote her sister Chloe that "....my daughter-in-law Sylvanus wife is one of the best wimmin living she waits on me like a babe. They have but two children they are girls the oldest one fourteen and the other twelve Sylvanus and wife send their love and say cum and see us they would be happy to see you. .... Sylvanus last harvest 350 bushels of wheat 600 bushels of oats 60 bushels of potatoes apples plenty and everything to make them comfortable. He has 30 acres of wheat in the ground and look well."
After giving up farming, Sylvanus resided in the Cincinnati - Northern Kentucky region. The city directories for Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky [C.S. Williams publisher] for 1867-68 showed an S.S. Simmons - engineer - h 32 Columbia and the 1869 directory recorded an S. Simmons - engineer - h ss Locust - b Brighton & Lowell. In 1880-81, Sylvanus was in the Bellevue City Directory [C.S. Williams publisher] as an engineer - h Taylor Ave. (Campbell Co., KY Genweb)
The C.S. Williams Cincinnati Directory for 1884 [p. 1259] lists Sylvanus Simmons as an engineer at Wiggins Block, res. Covington. The 1885 directory [p. 1239] shows him as an engineer at Wiggins Block. In 1887 he was an engineer, boarding at the St. Paul Hotel. (Ancestry.com) In 1897 [p.1430] Sylvanus was still shown as an engineer at Wiggins Block, but residing at 532 Howell Ave. in Clifton [a north central neighborhood in Cincinnati]. The 1900 directory showed the engineer living at 1931 Eastern Ave. [p. 1591] (footnote.com/fold3.com)
The Thursday, March 17, 1881 issue of Covington, Kentucky's The Daily Commonwealth [p. 1, col. 5] had the following item: "The funeral of Mrs. Henrietta P. Simmons, late wife of Mr. S. Simmons, took place this afternoon from the residence of her son-in-law, ex-councilman Bateman, on Bakewell St., where she died last Tuesday."
Sylvanus and Henrietta had two daughters, Henrietta [born c. 1846] and Ada [born 1848]. The two girls, their parents, their grandmother, and Ada's future husband, Edward Bateman were in Henry Co., IN in 1860.
Ada J. Bateman's 1930 death certificate creates more family mystery. The document gives her birthplace as Cincinnati and her mother's name as "Kate Van Loo" rather than Henrietta.
There is a 16 September 1845 Hamilton Co., Ohio marriage for Sylvanus Simmons and Catherine Van Liew. The 1850 Census, Cincinnati Ward 8, Hamilton Co., Ohio, shows the following household: S.S. Simmons [26] - engineer, b. Ia [Ind.]; Catherine [23], b. NJ; Sarah A. [4], b. Ohio; and Margaret J. [2], b. Ohio.
The 1860 Henry Co., Indiana census shows S. Simmons [35], Henrietta [34], Henrietta [14] and Ada [11]. The ages are close enough to consider the two families a match. Henrietta's obit would fit as well. Unfortunately, the names of the females conflict.
*Unsourced IGI entries give the 1823 birth, with his mother's maiden name given as Putnam rather than Jennison. A third IGI entry, with correct parents, has the year only - 1825.

Harriet P. [Simmons] was born about 1829 in New York.64–65
She died on 15 Mar 1881 at the age of 52 in Covington, Kenton Co., Kentucky.67 possibly 8 March 1881; the obit from
Thursday, 17 March 1881 says "died last Tuesday." She was buried on 17 Mar 1881 in Covington, Kenton Co.,
Kentucky.67 Harriet was also known as
Catherine Van Liew.66
Sylvanus Simmons and Harriet P. [Simmons] had the
following children:
47 ii. Ada J. Simmons, born 24 Apr 1848,
Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio;
married Edward Bateman, 3 Mar 1864, Cass Co., Indiana; died
27 Aug 1930, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.
29. Andrew
J. Simmons57 (John William-6,
John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 15 Dec 1828 in Ohio.3,9 The only record
so far for Andrew J. Simmons is the 1850 Kentucky census.
He is listed as A.G. Simmons [21 - Ohio] with wife E.L. [21 - Kentucky] and
Sarah Gelman [18 - Kentucky]. Andrew was an engineer.
The G. in "A.G." is very similar to that in "Gelman" and is clearly different from the j's on the page. That brings into question if John's and Dolly's youngest was actually "Andrew J." [Of course, with a birth of 1828, the chance that the middle initial 'J.' stood for Jackson, is very likely.]
It is entirely possible that Sarah Gelman was E.L.'s sister, as there is only three years between the two women.

30. Lucinda
M. Lynch (Mary Simmons-6, John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was
born about 1822 in Indiana.18 She died between 6 Jun 1860 and 2 Jun 1870 at the age of
38 in Monroe Co., Ohio.15–16
Lucinda may have been married twice. Several online sources show her as Lucinda
M. French. The estimated birth year and place match Lucinda Lynch. Mary Simmons
Lynch was living with William and Lucinda Okey in 1860 and William Lynch in
1870, This leads one to believe that Lucinda's marriage to William Okey was her
2nd and her 1st was to a man named French.
Lucinda and William had four children: Curtis Weir Okey [27 Jan 1846 - 17 June 1846 Monroe Co., Ohio]; Mary Cordelia Okey [c 1847 Monroe Co.,Ohio - 1890]; William French Okey [Jan 1850 Woodsfield, Monroe Co., Ohio - 27 June 1916 Los Angeles, California]; Sarah Martha Okey [c 1853] (Sarah supposedly married a Cooper and moved to Chicago.) http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/o/w/Janet-L-Downing/BOOK-0001/0002-0005.html#CHILD11

age of 81 in Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.72,74 He was buried after 2 Aug 1909
in Sharpsville Cemetery, Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.75 Most of the information available on the Simmons
family comes from the obituary of John Simmons which appeared in the "Tipton
Daily Tribune" on Wednesday, August 4, 1909.
"John T. Simmons, son of James and Hester Simmons was born in Ohio, January 31, 1828, and passed from this life August 2, 1909, at the venerable age of 81 years, six month, and two days old.
He was married in Howard County, Ind. to Miss Edith Crousour, June 24, 1849, and to them was given eleven children, five of whom with the faithfull wife, preceded him to the grave. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mima Crail, of Chicago; Mrs. Jane Plake, Sam M., and W., of Manilla, P.I., and Charles of Sharpsville, Ind. He leaves 40 grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Two brothers are yet living, Samuel of Camden, Ind. and Jacob of Gordon, Wis.
His boyhood was spent in Ohio, but when seventeen years of age, he came to Indiana, with his parents. In 1867 he moved to Sharpsville with his family, where he has been an honored citizen. Uncle John, as he has long been familiarly called, has passed through his share of troubles that come to all humanity, and through all has preserved a blameless life, doing good to all men as he has had opportunity, with never a harsh word of censure for any who had gone astray, but always extending a helping hand to lead them back to paths of restitude.
His family married off and all found homes outside of Sharpsville, excepting his son, Charles, who settled here, and with whom Uncle John has lived continuously for twenty years in peaceful harmony. To the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Allie Simmons he was a kind father and wise counselor, and she has indeed been a loving daughter to him. The two granddaughters, LoLttie [??] and Goldie, will miss dear grandpa without whom their homecomings will never be so happy. There were never any but kindly words and loving deeds to remember while this home circle is broken and the son, daughter, and grandchildren will pass many lonely hours, let us remember that Grandpa is at rest - he will never suffer pain again, but will be ready, with outstretched arms and that same kindly, loving smile we know so well on earth to greet us when we, too, hear our Savior call. "It is enough, come up higher." "
John Simmons was a farmer, and according to census records, lived next to Edith's parents. Later on he worked at the local sawmill. After Edith died in 1877, John depended on Mima to manage the household and help look after her three younger brothers, Sam, Charles, and John W., until she married in 1881. After Charles married, John moved in with him.
Charles and Allie, and Edith are buried next to one another in the Sharpsville Cemetery. A "John Simons" according to county cemetery records is buried there in an unmarked grave. This is likely John Simmons.

and Hester [Moore] Simmons, was born in Ohio in December of 1832. She married
Benjamin Curtis in 1863. Her husband died in 1866 and was buried at Crown Point
Cemetery in Kokomo, Indiana. Following Benjamin's death, Maria moved in with
her brother Samuel and his family. She helped raise Samuel's children after his
wife died in childbirth. Maria remained with the family after Samuel married
Ines Whalen in 1880 in Clinton County. In 1900 Maria was still looking after
the family. Nephew Morton and his new family resided with Maria in Carroll
County, Indiana. Maria died in 1905 and was buried in the family plot with
husband Benjamin, brother Samuel and his first wife, her parents, and several
infants [probably all Samuel's] at Crown Point.

(James Morris-7, John William-6, John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was
born on 24 Apr 1837 in Butler Co., Ohio.23,89
He died on 14 May 1923 at the age of 86 in Camden, Carroll Co., Indiana.87,89
Samuel Simmons was born in Butler Co., Ohio in 1837 to James and Hester
Jane [Moore] Simmons. He came to Indiana about 1845 with his parents, two
brothers and sister. In 1860 he married Sarah Parker in Howard County.
After the Civil War broke out, Samuel enlisted in the 89th Indiana Infantry, Company D on 28 August 1862 in Kokomo. The 89th saw action at Mumfordville, Kentucky, Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, and Nashville, Tennessee among other places. He was mustered out on 19 July 1865 in Mobile, Alabama. He had been promoted from private to corporal.
Sarah died in childbirth in 1878, leaving Samuel with three children. Either before Sarah's death or shortly thereafter, Samuel moved to neighboring Clinton County. In 1879 daughter Emma married William Graves, but was apparently widowed, divorced or abandoned within a few months, as she was living with her father in 1880. Maria Curtis, Samuel's widowed sister, was also living with her brother. Samuel remarried in April 1880, taking Ines Whelan, 25 years his junior, as his second wife. Ines died early in 1885.
Before 1883, the Simmons brood had moved to Carroll County. They were joined by their father sometime after he was widowed. Samuel, Maria, and their father lived out their remaining years in the town of Camden.
Samuel married divorce´ Harriet Griffith in 1885. Harriet and William Griffith had married in October 1881 and their daughter Fern Mae was born in September 1882. They divorced the next year. Samuel's elder brother, Jacob, had been married to Harriet's sister Rebecca in 1872.
Harriet's daughter, Fern Mae, was raised by an aunt. Fern Mae married Samuel's son Morton in 1900. Morton and Fern Mae [Griffith] Simmons were living in the household of his Aunt Maria Curtis in Carroll County according to the 1900 census.
Section 4, Lot 53 of Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo was the burial place for much of the Simmons family. Samuel's parents, Maria and her husband, and Samuel's first two wives were interred there. In addition there is a Minnie Simmons, who died in 1876, and five infants, all boys. One was buried 11 October 1880, another on 19 July 1881, and two on 13 May 1883. There is no date given for the burial of the fifth infant. Presumably, the infants buried between 1880 and 1883 were Ines's and the infant with no burial date was the child to whom Sarah died giving birth. Morton and Fern were also buried at Crown Point. Harriet evidently had other plans for her husband's remains.
Samuel died in May 1923, and Harriet Simmons applied for a widow's Civil War pension in June. Samuel had applied for an invalid pension in August 1890. Harriet was residing with her son-in-law, John Mullondoro, and two grandchildren in 1930. John had married Mary Simmons, youngest of Samuel's and Harriet's children.

35. Jacob
Nathaniel Simmons23,86,92,96–97 (James Morris-7, John William-6,
John-5, John-4, John-3, John-2, Richard-1) was born on 20 Nov 1840 in Preble
Co., Ohio.23
He died on 21 May 1927 at the age of 86 in Chetek, Barron Co., Wisconsin.23 Jacob Nathaniel Simmons was the
youngest child born to James and Hester in Ohio in 1840. He was a youngster
when the family moved to Indiana in 1845.
Jacob answered the "call to arms" when the Civil War broke out. His pension application, dated 23 April 1893, shows that he served in Company D & B 60th Indiana Infantry and Company K of the 60th Indiana Infantry. This brings about some confusion. There are three entries in the service records for "Jacob N. Simmons." [1] Company D, 6th Indiana Infantry was mustered in 22 April 1861, saw action in West Virginia and was mustered out at Indianapolis on 2 August 1861. The entry shows Simmons was from Howard Co., Indiana [2] Company B, 60th Indiana Infantry enlistment began on 11 March 1862. The regiment saw action at Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi. The unit was mustered out at Indianapolis on 21 March 1865. [3] Company K, 60th Indiana Infantry enlistment began 31 March 1862 and ended 21 March 1865. Jacob Simmons mustered out of Co. K as a full sergeant.
Apparently, Jacob served the three month enlistment with the 6th and reenlisted with the 60th in 1862. He must have been transferred from Company B to Company K following promotion to corporal or sergeant.
After the war, Jacob returned to Howard County and married Matilda Reeder in July. They had a daughter, Ella, born in July of 1866. Matilda may have died from complications with the birth.
In 1872, he married Rebecca Matilda Rule. Rebecca was divorced from Porter White. They had married in February 1869 and Rebecca gave birth to a daughter Lauretta in March. Jacob and Rebecca had five children in addition to raising the daughters from their first marriages. Rebecca's youngest sister, Harriet, married Jacob's brother, Samuel in 1885.
Shortly after the marriage, Jacob and Rebecca packed up their daughters and moved to Wisconsin where their own children were born.
Lauretta married Benjamin Simmons, Samuel's son from his first marriage. Jacob and Rebecca lived in Chippewa, Vernon, and Barron Counties in Wisconsin. Rebecca died in 1901 and Jacob in 1927.
