The Crousore Family, Part II:

Brother John Bock who swore the affidavit, stated that "Catherine Shaver who has since died leaving three children viz: Michael, Sarah and Margaret Shaver." Presumably then, Catherine died between 1838 and 1860.
There was a Catharine Shaver [1f under 10, 1f 26-44] listed in the 1810 census for Harrison Co., Virginia [roll 69, p. 950]

Mary Ann is also listed as a daughter, but her death record showed her parents as Nicholas and Amelia. [WV Deaths 1853-1973: Mary Ann Davis.]

Michael Bock Jr. and Hannah Martin were married on 25 Apr 1817 in Harrison Co., Virginia, United States.37 Hannah Martin was born circa 1785.37 She died before 1850 at the age of 65 in Harrison Co., Virginia, United States.37

15.  Elizabeth Bock39 (Margaret Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born in 1785–1790 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.40 She died before 1838 at the age of 53 in probably Virginia.41 Elizabeth was named in her father's pension as the wife of Jacob Wolf. She died before her father [1838] leaving children Margaret, Aaron, Susanna and Sarah.

Elizabeth Bock and Jacob Wolf were married.39 Jacob Wolf39 was born (date unknown).

16.  Nicholas Bock (Margaret Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1787 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.8 He died on 21 Jul 1861 at the age of 74 in Marion Co., Virginia, United States.8

Nicholas Bock and Emilia "Milley" Baker or Miller were married circa 1822 in Harrison Co., Virginia, United States.42 based on age of eldest son Emilia "Milley" Baker or Miller4243 was born circa 1785 in Pennsylvania.4243 alternate: 1790 - Virginia Name given as Emiline Miller [Flint3], Amelia Baker [Wetzel Co., WV Connections], Emilia [1850 census], Milley [1860 census].

17.  George Bock44 (Margaret Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born on 6 Apr 1791 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.45 He died on 7 Jul 1842 at the age of 51 in Vermillion Co., Illinois, United States.45 He was buried after 7 Jul 1842 in Bock Cemetery, Westville, Vermilion, Illinois, United States.45 George and Cynthia went to Illinois with Cynthia's parents.

George Bock and Cynthia Morgan were married on 4 Sep 1816 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, United States.44 Cynthia Morgan was born on 17 Dec 1797 in Morgantown, Monongalia, Virginia, United States.44 She died on 28 May 1882 at the age of 84 in Vermillion Co., Illinois, United States.44 She was buried after 28 May 1882 in Bock Cemetery, Westville, Vermilion, Illinois, United States.44

18.  Margaret Bock46 (Margaret Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born in 1791–1799 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.47 She died after 1860 at the age of 69 in Marion Co., West Virginia, United States.46 Margaret was named as an heir of Michael Bock in the 1860 affidavit by her brother John in their father's pension file. She was named as Margaret Ensminger.
Searches of census and other records of the appropriate timeframe [1790-1870] for Margaret Ensminger have not turned up any favorable results.
There were three of that name who were "possible candidates."

(1) A Margaret Ensminger born 1814-1817, wife of George, was identified in West Virginia death records of sons George and Jacob S. as Margaret Wolf. It is possible that this Margaret Wolf was the daughter of Elizabeth Bock and Jacob Wolf.

(2) A Margaret Ensminger, born about 1786/7, wife of another George, resided in Washington Co., Pennsylvania and was identified as Margaret Albert in various family trees. Issue: Charlotta, Sarah, Margaret.

(3) The third Margaret, surnamed Allport, was born about 1790 and resided in Marion Co., Virginia. She was the mother of Catherine, Michael, George and Mahala. Mahala married John Bock.

The 1800 and 1810 censuses were examined in an attempt to account for the children of Michael Bock. Approximate years of birth were available for all but Catherine, Elizabeth and Margaret. In 1800 there was a female under 10, 2 females 10-15 and 1 female 16-25 unidentified. Presumably Elizabeth and Catherine were married by 1810. If Catherine was the Catherine Shaver 26-44 in 1810, then she was the 16-25 female in 1800. That would probably make Elizabeth and Margaret the 10-15 year olds, thus born between 1775-1784. One could be the girl under 10 [born 1791-1799.]

Margaret Bock and _______ Ensminger were married.46 _______ Ensminger46 was born (date unknown).

19.  David Bock48 (Margaret Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1792 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.49 He died epilepsy in Dec 1879 at the age of 87 in Monongalia Co., West Virginia, United States.49 The 1830 shows the Bocks with three children born between 1816-1820, suggesting a marriage around 1814.
The 1830 household included 1m under 5, 2 m 5-9, 2 m 10-14, 1m 30-39, 1f under 5, 1f 5-9, 1f 10-14, 1f 30-39.

George was a private, but was later promoted to full Sergeant. Both were prisoners of war and died at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio of typhoid fever. Albert died about 7 November 1861 and George in December.

A list of Confederate Prisoners sent to Camp Chase in 1861-62 was published online by the Ohio Historical Society from their collection. Most of the prisoners, civilian and military, were from Western Virginia and Kentucky. The date of transfer, release or death followed the name. #307 was George Thompson, Nov. 7 VA and #308 was Albert Thompson, Nov. 7 VA. [This would suggest that father and son died on the same date.]

Diary entries from the camp noted on 6 November 1861 [or 13 Nov.] that 11 prisoners were brought in from Cheat Mountain.

*Wikipedia: 31st Virginia - Co. H was commanded by Capt. Thomas A. Bradford and was known as the Barbour Greys. The 31st Virginia's initial action was at the Battle of Cheat Mountain in Pocahontas and Randolph Counties in what would become West Virginia [September 12-15, 1861]. This was Robert E. Lee's first command of the war. Rain, fog, terrain and misinformation from captured Union soldiers was disastrous for Confederate troops unfamiliar with the area. Federal troops, on the other hand, knew the terrain and were able to out-maneuver the enemy. Among the Rebel casualties were 20 captured. The Thompsons were probably among them and were sent to Camp Chase. The next engagement for the 31st was not until Jackson's Valley Campaign in the spring of 1862.

40.  Jacob Henry "Big Jake" Haught84 (Catherine Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1794 in Green Co., Pennsylvania, United States.19,84 Alternate: 1781-1790 He died in 1850–1859 at the age of 56 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, United States.85 The Jacob Henry Haught story, like so many from the Crousore-Haught lines, is a tangled web. The most common birth year given by sources is 1794, however the 1850 census shows him to be 60 [b. 1789/90] and the 1840 census suggests a range of 1781-1790 for his birth. Eleven children are credited to Jacob H. Haught and Mary Cannon.
The following is the possible list of children:
Susan [c1810]: She probably married about 1832 to her cousin, Jacob B. Haught, son of Jacob Haught and Magdalena Crousore. Susan gave birth to eleven children: Lydia [c1834], William [c1836], John [c1838], Tobias [c1840],
Christena [c1842], Simon [c1844], Mary Ann and Catherine [c1846], Asa [c1848], Peter [c1851] and Levi [c1854].

Magdalene [20 Nov 1812 - 22 Nov 1889 Clay, Monongalia, WV; 77 yrs., 2 days]* (She may be the Mary who appears on several family trees. Magdalene was living with brother Levi in 1870 and 1880. She may have been mistaken for her mother due to her age being given as 75 in 1860.)
The West Virginia 1853-1970 [familysearch.org] gives Magdelene's parents as Jacob and Mary.
Peter [c1814]: He married Rachel Wilson on 6 January 1838. They moved to Wirt Co., West Virginia in 1845.

Christena [c1815-24 Jan 1885 Clay Twp., Monongalia, WV (65)]: She married Jacob A. Varner [1814-1896].

Tobias [24 Aug 1816 Marion Co., VA-18 Oct 1879 Marion Co., WV]: He married Cassandra Tennant [1815-1902].

Jacob Cannon [c1820 Greene Co., PA]: He married Nancy Eddy on 25 Sept 1844 in Greene Co., PA.

Levi [25 Nov 1825-29 Apr 1906 Marion Co., WV]: He married Dorcas Walker.

Uriah [23 June 1827 Monongalia Co., VA-3 Aug 1906 Marion Co., WV]: He married Minerva Tennant [b. 1833]

Jasper [c1830]: He married Jemima Floyd on 22 Oct 1854 in Marion Co., VA.

Acloah "Axie" [13 Feb 1833-10 Oct 1883 Tyler, WV]: She married Zephaniah McCoy [1840-1884].
Jacob Henry "Big Jake" Haught and Mary Cannon were married circa 1810 in Pennsylvania or Virginia.86 Mary Cannon87 was born in 1791–1800 in Virginia.84,86 She died before 1850 at the age of 59 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, United States.87 Mary Cannon Haught does not appear on the 1850 census, so it is assumed that she died between 1840 and 1850. Her name appears as Mary Magdalene Cannon in numerous family trees, with births of 1780, 1804 and 1812. The latter, I believe, is clearly based on the 1850 census, where she is mistaken for daughter Madlin/Magdelene [b. c1812].

41.  Ann Elizabeth Haught (Catherine Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1796/7 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, United States.19,88 She died circa 1877 at the age of 80 in Independence, Washington, Ohio, United States.19

Ann Elizabeth Haught and Joseph Haught were married on 19 Feb 1815 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.86 Joseph Haught88, son of Jacob Haught/Hayd and Magdalene Crousore, was born circa 1794/5 in South Branch Valley, Virginia, United States.86,88 He died on 24 Nov 1876 at the age of 81 in Washington Co., Ohio, United States.86 Joseph was the son of Jacob and Magdalena [Crousore] Haught, making him and Ann Elizabeth first cousins, with common grandparents.
The couple had at least ten children. The 1850 Washington Co., Ohio census lists seven: Mary A. [c1828], Margaret [c1830], Hannah [c1832], Alcinda [c1835], Bennett [c1837], Serbina [c1844] and Drusilla [c1846].

The
Haught Family of America website lists the following ten children: Annie, Bennett, Christenia, Jesse, Lucinda, Martha Malinda, Tobias [1813], Peter [1818], Simeon [1823] and Polly [1835].
The 1840 census accounts for the five eldest children listed in 1850. In addition there are males [10-14 and 15-19] and a female [15-19]. Mary A. or Hannah could be Annie. Lucinda and Alcinda are probably the same person.

The Descendants of Peter Haught provides yet a third list of the children: Tobias [1813], Peter [1816], Simeon [1823], Jesse [1785], Bennett, Christenia, Lucinda, Polly [4 February 1828], Annie and Martha Matilda. The possible list of children for Joseph and Ann: Peter [c1816], Jesse [c1820], Simeon [c1823], Christenia [1816-1820], Martha Malinda [1821-1825], Ann E. [1828/9], Mary A./Polly [1829], Margaret [c1830], Hannah [c1833], Lucinda [c1835], Bennett [c1837], Serbina [c1844] and Drucilla [c1846]. There may have been additional children, as a son Tobias frequently appears for this couple with a birth year of 1813 - two years before Joseph and Ann were married.

42.  Joseph Haught88 (Magdalene Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1794/5 in South Branch Valley, Virginia, United States.86,88 He died on 24 Nov 1876 at the age of 81 in Washington Co., Ohio, United States.86 Joseph was the son of Jacob and Magdalena [Crousore] Haught, making him and Ann Elizabeth first cousins, with common grandparents.

Joseph Haught and Ann Elizabeth Haught were married on 19 Feb 1815 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.86 Ann Elizabeth Haught, daughter of John Haught and Catherine Crousore, was born circa 1796/7 in Monongalia Co., Virginia, United States.19,88 She died circa 1877 at the age of 80 in Independence, Washington, Ohio, United States.19

43.  Abraham Haught (Mary Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1809 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.89 He died in 1850–1855 at the age of 41 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.90 Abraham Haught was the son of Jacob Haught and Mary Crousore. He was born about 1809 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania. Abraham married Margaret Merryman about 1826. He died in Fayette Co. before the family moved to Iowa between 1850-1855.
Margaret and five of their children were on the Iowa State Census in 1856 [
IA_50, p. 690, Ancestry.com, Iowa Census Collection 1836-1925]

Abraham Haught and Margaret Merryman were married circa 1826 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.91 based on age of eldest child Margaret Merryman was born circa 20 May 1804 in Pennsylvania.92 She died on 12 Jun 1886 at the age of 82 in Clayton Co., Iowa, United States.92 Age given as 81 yrs. 11 mos. 22 days She was buried in Brown Cemetery, Mallory, Clayton, Iowa, United States.92

Abraham Haught and Margaret Merryman had the following children:

                              i.   Nancy Haught was born on 2 Sep 1828 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.93
62             ii.   John M. Haught, born 22 Aug 1830, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States; married Mary H. [Haught], ca 1854; died 25 May 1899, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.

Poor Farm, Clayton, Iowa, United States.94 Sarah never married. The Clayton Co., Iowa death register shows that she was a resident of the Clayton County Poor Farm at the time of her death. She died from phthisis, tuberculosis and quinzyon 14 December 1888. Sarah had been under treatment for 18 months. She was buried on the facility grounds on 15 December. Her death was recorded on 29 December 1888.
Sarah was also listed in the Brown Cemetery burials with other members of the family. It is probably that her brother James had her remains re interred in the family plot.
vi.   David L. Haught was born on 11 Mar 1838 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.93 He died on 6 Aug 1871 at the age of 33 in Mallory, Clayton, Iowa, United States.95 He was buried in Brown Cemetery, Mallory, Clayton, Iowa, United States.95

44.  Elizabeth Crousore96 (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1798 in Pennsylvania.96 She died in 1850–1859 at the age of 52 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.96 Elizabeth's relationship to the rest of the Crousores has yet to be determined. She would just about have to fall into one of two family groups:
1) an older daughter of John Crousore, making her about six years older than Jacob. John Crousore had two daughters born between 1794-1799, based on the 1810 census. Both were no longer in the household in 1820. Elizabeth fits well in this scenario and has been added to this family until evidence is found that she does not belong. That Elizabeth and Jacob married Smith siblings lends further circumstantial support to this decision.

2) a daughter of Christian; considering the age difference between Christian and his wife, Elizabeth would have to be the product of an earlier marriage.
Elizabeth Crousore and John Smith were married on 3 Jun 1819 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.97 John Smith96, son of William Smith and Elizabeth Reel, was born circa 1799 in Virginia.96 He died in 1871–1879 at the age of 72 in Tippecanoe Or Howard Co., Indiana, United States.98 John and Elizabeth Smith traveled in sync with Jacob and Amy Crousore from Clinton Co., Ohio to Rush, Delaware and Howard Counties in Indiana.
John and Elizabeth were married in Clinton Co., Ohio in 1819. His 1 June 1819 marriage license named his father as William Smith. John also gave testimony that his sister Ama Jemima was of legal age to marry in 1822, for her license application.

14 November 1828: Gustavus & Barabary Conger to John Smith for $200, 80 acres more or less, being the West ½ of the Southeast ¼ of Section 21 of Township 14N of Range 9 East. [Rush Co. Deed Book B:323-324, April 1827-December 1829]

26 December 1829: John & Elizabeth Smith to Francis B. Finley [both parties of Rush C., IN] for $200, 160 acres more or less, being the Northeast ¼ of Section 20, Township (14N) of Range nine east. [Rush Co. Deed Book C:15-16, October 1829-August 1831]

2 November 1837: John Smith issued patent [accession #IN3460_179] on 40 acres, SW¼ of SE¼ of Section 19, Twp. 21N, Range 9E in Delaware Co., IN.

2 July 1839: [Mortgage deed] John Smith deeded 40 acres, the SW¼ of the SE¼ of Section 19 in Twp. 21N of Range 9E, for $30 to be paid over three years, to the Commisioner of school lands. Paid in full on 27 March 1842. [Delaware Co. Deed Book 4:249]

29 March 1842: John Smith in consideration of the sum of $60 paid by John Crosore leased for 12 months to said John Crousore the following: 40 acres of the SW¼ of the SE¼ of Section 19, Twp. 21N, Range 9E.
  [Delaware Co. Deeds 6:385]
10 May 1845: John & Elizabeth Smith to Aaron Crites for the sum of $150 the SW¼ of the SE¼ of Section 19, Twp. 21N, Range 9E [40 acres]. [Delaware Co. Deeds 7:538]

The Smiths settled in Howard Co., Indiana during the late 1840s. John and two of his sons, Abraham and John Jr., moved to Tippecanoe Co. during the 1860s. Both sons were back in Howard Co. by 1880.

Elizabeth did not appear in the 1860 census, so probably died during the 1850s. John last appeared in the 1870 census. He may have died in either Tippecanoe or Howard Co.

The family of John and Elizabeth Smith seems to have suffered a similar fate as that of John's sister. The four youngest children, Stephen, Katy, Polly and David, as well as both daughter Elizabeth and mother Elizabeth did not appear on the 1860 census.

Jacob evidently separated from the family after his December 1860 marriage. John Senior and Junior were living with Abraham in 1870. Margaret had either died or married by that time.

John Smith and Elizabeth Crousore had the following children:

                              i.   Margaret Smith was born circa 1820 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.96
ii.   John Smith Jr. was born circa 1824 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.96
iii.   Elizabeth Smith was born circa 1825 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.96
67            iv.   Abraham "Abram" Smith, born ca 1827, Rush Co., Indiana, United States; married Margaret E. Higgs, 2 Dec 1865, Howard Co., Indiana, United States.
                             v.   Isaac Smith was born circa 1829 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.96
68            vi.   Jacob Smith, born ca 1831, Rush Co., Indiana, United States; married Mary A. Parker, 4 Nov 1860, Howard Co., Indiana, United States.
vii.   Stephen Smith was born circa 1834 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.96
viii.   Katy Smith was born circa 1836 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.96
ix.   Polly Smith was born circa 1839 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.96
                             x.   David Smith was born circa 1842 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.96

45.  Jacob Crousore10 (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born about 1804 in Pennsylvania.10 He died in 1877–1878 at the age of 73 in Lone Tree Twp., McPherson, Kansas, United States.10,99 Jacob Crousore was born in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania about 1804. His father and uncle Christian moved to Clinton Co., Ohio about 1815, settling in Clark Twp. Jacob married Ama Jemima Smith in late August of 1822. Since Jacob had yet to reach the age of majority, his father gave approval for the marriage. Amy's brother John signed that she was of legal age to marry. Their two eldest children were born in Clinton County.
Jacob, his father, several of his brothers-in-laws and other related families moved to Indiana about 1826, settling in Rush County. No records of land purchases have been located for any of the families.

The families relocated to Harrison Twp., Delaware Co. between 1834-1837. Section 4: Henry W. Smith, 22 Nov 1838; Section 19: John Smith, 14 Oct. 1836 and Henry W. Smith, 28 Oct. 1836; Section 24: Jonathan Langley, 11 April 1836; Section 25: Samuel Langley, 29 Aug. 1836; Section 26: James Smith, 3 Sept. 1834; Section 30: Abraham Smith, 30 Nov. 1835, John and Jonathan Langley, 29 Aug. 1836 and Nicholas Reel, 8 Sept. 1836; Section 31: Jacob Crousore, 1 Aug. 1836; Section 36: Stephen Crousore, 20 March 1836 and John Crousore, 29 Aug. 1836.

On 1 August 1837 Jacob was issued 40 acres in Delaware County. He was listed as a resident of that county on the patent. [NENW Sec. 31 Twp. 21-N Range 9-E 2nd PM] This property was sold to Thomas Wooley on 17 December 1839.

Jacob and John "Crawsaw" of Richland Twp. and John W. and Nicholas Reel of Monroe Twp. were on the Madison Co., Indiana poll tax in 1842. (Madison Co., IN Tax List 1842, Willard C. Heiss & Imogene Brown, Alexandria, IN, 1981, p. 18) John was on the 1840 census in Madison Co., but Jacob was enumerated in Delaware Co. He may have moved to Madison Co. for a short time.

The Crousores and some of their neighbors were on the move again by the late 1840s. This time they moved northwest to Howard Co.
John, John Jr. and Stephen Crousore, along with Samuel Langley settled on Section 5 Twp. 23-N, Range 4-E. Jacob settled on 80 acres on Section 19 Twp. 23-N Range 5-E. John Smith settled near the first group on Section 4.
The years in Howard Co. are somewhat of a mystery. Several of Jacob and Amy's children who were on the 1850 census were gone by 1860 [John, Sarah, Nancy, Polly, Jacob and Abigail]. Accident or disease probably took them or they were somehow missed in county records. Likewise, David and Amy were gone by 1870. Edith who married John Simmons in 1849, died in 1877. Julia who married George Pugh died from typhoid about 1865. William headed west during the early 1870s and died in the Oklahoma Territory in 1906.

Jacob and Amy took in Julia's two youngest sons, Albert and James after their mother died and father remarried. When William decided to head west, Jacob and Amy went along. Albert Pugh went with them. There is no record of James after 1870.

The Crousore party eventually settled in Mc.Pherson Co. Kansas. In 1873 Jacob and William were listed on the Assessment Roll for King City Twp. Both were listed on the 13 August 1874 and 12 August 1875 School Tax Levies for School District 15. They were again listed on the Lone Tree Twp. Assessment Roll for 1874-75. William's household had one male over 21 and two males and females under 21. Jacob's household include one male and one female over 21 and one male under 21 [Jacob, Amy and Albert.]

The 1875 Kansas State Census for Lone Tree showed Jacob [73], Emma [76] and Albert [11] Crousoar. The next entry was William [44], Sarah [15], Isaac [17], Emma [10], Charles [8] and George [6] Crousoar. (Albert should have been listed as a Pugh; Sarah, Isaac and Emma/Amy as Lewis. James Pugh and William's wife Mary, presumably deceased, were missing, as was William's daughter Ida. The makeup of William's household does not match with the 1874-75 assessment.)

The 1876-77 Assessment for Lone Tree [residents over 21 in 1877] showed Jacob with a household of two and William with five. Since Albert was still living, Amy apparently died between the 1875 enumeration and the assessment of 1877. William's household was probably himself, his three children and step-daughter Amy L.ewis.

By April of 1878, William had left McPherson Co. That would probably mean that Jacob Crousore had died during late 1877 or early 1878.

Jacob Crousore and Ama Jemima "Amy" Smith were married on 29 Aug 1822 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.100 Ama Jemima "Amy" Smith100101, daughter of William Smith and Elizabeth Reel, was born about 1803 in Virginia.101 She died circa 1876 at the age of 73 in Lone Tree Twp., McPherson, Kansas, United States.10,102 Numerous unsourced Ancestry.com and Rootsweb family trees have the wife of Jacob Crousore recorded as "Annie I. Ice." The origin of the ICE surname is unknown. Annie as a first name is a misinterpretation of handwriting in the 1850-1870 censuses. Ama, Amie and Amy J. were are interpreted as Anna, Annie and Anny I. Likewise, the same problem existed for daughter, Ama J.
Jacob Crousore and Jemima Smith were married in Clinton Co., Ohio in 1822. A Delaware Co., Indiana deed from 1839 further clarified the issue of her name, it was recorded there as Ama Jemima. (Delaware Co., IN Deeds, Book 4:503, 17 Dec 1839, FHL #2069826) A later deed had her as Amy.

Jacob Crousore and Ama Jemima Smith had the following children:

                              i.   John Crousore was born about 1823 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.101 John, probably named for his grandfather, has not been located on the 1860 or later censuses. It is presumed that he died during the 1850s. John would have been in his late 20s to mid-30s.
69             ii.   Julia A. Crousore, born abt 1825, Clinton Co., Ohio, United States; married George Pugh, 29 Dec 1853, Howard Co., Indiana; died ca 1865, Howard Co., Indiana, United States.
iii.   Sarah Crousore was born about 1827 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.101 Sarah, like her brother John, has not been located in any of the post-1850 censuses or marriage records. She most likely died during the 1850s in her late 20s or early 30s.
70            iv.   Edith Crousore, born 20 May 1829, Rush Co., Indiana, United States; married John T. Simmons, 24 Jun 1849, Howard Co., Indiana; died 1 Apr 1877, Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.
                             v.   Nancy E. Crousore was born about 1831 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.101 Nancy was the third of this family to seemingly vanish after 1850. She probably died before 1860 while in her 20s.
71            vi.   William Crousore, born abt 1832, Rush Co., Indiana, United States; married Mary Browning, 18 Mar 1866, Howard Co., Indiana, United States; died 26 Apr 1906, Woodward Co., Oklahoma Territory, United States.
vii.   Polly Crousore was born about 1834 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.103 Polly was the fifth of the family to not appear in post-1850 records. She probably died before 1860 in her late teens or early twenties.
viii.   Jacob Crousore was born about 1836 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.103 Jacob, undoubtedly named for his father, also failed to appear in records after 1850. Assuming that he died during the 1850s, Jacob would have been between 15 and 23 when he died.
ix.   David Crousore was born about 1838 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.101 David appeared on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but apparently died before 1870. He wold have been in his twenties.
                             x.   Ama Jemima "Amy" Crousore was born about 1840 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.101 Amy, like her mother, was incorrectly indexed as Anny and Anna in census records. She evidently passed away during the 1860s while in her twenties.
xi.   Abigail Crousore was born about 1843 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.101 Abigail was the youngest of Jacob and Amy's children. Like five of her siblings, Abigail does not appear in post-1850 records. She would have been between 8 and 16 when she died.

46.  Catharine Crousore (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born circa 1809 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.104 She was also known as Catharine Reel.1

Catharine Crousore and Nicholas Reel were married on 28 Jun 1827 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.1,105 Nicholas Reel1,106107, son of Solomon Reel and Susannah Crousore, was born in 1800–1809 in Pennsylvania.107 He was born in 1801–1809 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.27 He died before 1850 at the age of 49 in Probably Madison Co., Indiana, United States.104,106 Nicholas and Catherine followed the general Crousore migration. The Reels were in Clinton Co., Ohio in 1820. They moved to Rush Co., Indiana, where Nicholas married Catherine, then to Madison Co. with John Crousore and on to Howard Co.
Nicholas did not appear in the 1850 census, so must have died during the 1840s.

Nicholas Reel and Catharine Crousore had the following children:

                              i.   Jacob Reel was born circa 1827 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.106
ii.   Susannah Reel was born circa 1830 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.106
iii.   Alexander Reel was born circa 1832 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.106
iv.   John Reel was born circa 1834 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.106
                             v.   Amanda J. Reel was born circa 1838 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.106
vi.   Francis M. Reel was born circa 1842 in Madison Co., Indiana, United States.106

47.  Madaline Crousore (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born about 1810 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.1 She was also known as Madaline Miller.1 She was also known as Madaline Defenbaugh.1 Madeline and John Defenbaugh were residing in Pleasant Valley, Cowley Co., Kansas in 1880. Living with them was John Croussore [15], listed as a grandson. (T9_377, p. 556D, ED 177)

Madaline Crousore and Henry Miller were married on 26 May 1843 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1 Henry Miller1 died before 1850 in Indiana.108 Henry does not appear in the 1850 census. Madeline is living with her father and is listed under her maiden name.

Madaline Crousore and John Defenbaugh were married on 24 Nov 1855 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1 John Defenbaugh1 was born about 1810 in Ohio.1

48.  John C. Crousore Jr. (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born on 30 Nov 1814 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.1 He died on 19 Jan 1887 at the age of 72 in Howard Co., Indiana.1 The Crown Point Cemetery database [Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana] (http://edanddebby.com/HCC/Crownpt/CPTCOYCRO.html) gives John's date of birth as 30 November 1814. The tombstone photo appears to read "aged 72 ys 11 ms 15 ds."
John was probably born in Clinton Co., Ohio shortly after the family's arrival there. He moved to Indiana with his parents and siblings during the late 1820s. It was probably this John who purchased two 40 acre tracts in Delaware Co. on 15 March and 5 August 1837[SESW & SENW Sec 36 Twp 21-N Range 8-E 2nd PM] (www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch) His father was recorded in Madison Co. in 1840.

From Delaware Co., the Crousores moved to Howard Co. On 20 March 1849, as John Crousore Junior, he bought 80 acres there. [W½SE Sec 5 Twp. 23-N Range 4-E 2nd PM] (www.glorecords.blm.gov/PatentSearch)

John C. Crousore Jr. and Hannah Secrest were married on 29 Mar 1838 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1 Hannah Secrest1 was born about 1814 in Ohio.1 She died on 20 Aug 1909 at the age of 95 in Howard Co., Indiana.1 She was also known as Hannah Crousore.1

John C. Crousore and Hannah Secrest had the following children:

                              i.   Stephen Crousore was born on 4 Feb 1837 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1 He died on 19 Jun 1909 at the age of 72 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1

iii.   Mary Crousore was born circa 1846 in Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1 Mary was not listed in the 1860 census, so probably died during the 1850s.
iv.   Amy Crousore was born circa 1849 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1 She died on 1 Nov 1890 at the age of 41 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1
                             v.   Lewis Noah Crousore was born in Feb 1853 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1 He died on 5 Jul 1918 at the age of 65 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1
vi.   Margaret Crousore was born circa 1854 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1
vii.   Anna "Anny" Crousore was born circa 1859 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1

49.  Mary "Polly" Crousore109 (John-2, Nicholas-1) was born about 1815 in Clinton Co., Ohio, United States.1,110111 alternate birth: 1819, birth place: Pennsylvania She died in 1895 at the age of 80 in Tipton Co., Indiana, United States.112 She was also known as Mary Langley.1 The 1850 census gives Mary's age as 35 [b. 1815, Penn.] In the 1870 census, a Polly Langley is shown as 55 [b. 1815, Ohio.] Polly is residing with a Silas Langley, whose age fits Mary's youngest son of that name.

Mary "Polly" Crousore and Samuel Langley were married about 1835 in Madison Or Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1,109 Samuel Langley1, son of Jonathan Langley and Hannah Smith, was born about 1817 in Randolph Co., North Carolina.1,109 He died about 1853 at the age of 36 in Howard Co., Indiana.1

Samuel Langley and Mary Crousore had the following children:

                              i.   Ellen Jane Langley was born on 9 Jan 1836 in Madison Or Delaware Co., Indiana, United States.1 She died on 19 Mar 1914 at the age of 78 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.1

It is questionable that Ithamer's first wife was born in the area in 1819. The 1833 and 1841 marrages are also questionable. Susanna's family was a late arrival in Indiana among the Cousores and was probably still in Delaware or Madison County at the time.

62.  John M. Haught137 (Abraham-3, Mary Crousore-2, Nicholas-1) was born on 22 Aug 1830 in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, United States.93,138 He died on 25 May 1899 at the age of 68 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.138139 He was buried on 28 May 1899 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.138 John M. Haught was a native of Pennsylvania, where he was still living in 1850. By 1860 John had moved to Hamilton Co., Ohio, married and started a family. He was residing in Dearborn Co., Indiana when he enlisted in Co. A of the 18th Indiana Infantry. The Haughts settled in Indianapolis after the war. They remained there except for a few years in the mid-1880s, when John and Mary lived in Mallory Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa.
John was a shoemaker by trade, although he listed his occupation as clergyman in 1885. [IA1885_167, p. 125] On an interesting note, in 1880, John was listed as "laid up, spinal and heart issues." [T9_294, p. 105A] It would appear that John was suffering from illness or wounds received during the war.

John M. Haught and Mary H. [Haught] were married circa 1854.137 based on age of son James Mary H. [Haught]137,140 was born circa 1825 in Pennsylvania.140 She died on 6 May 1907 at the age of 82 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.140 She was buried on 8 May 1907 in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, United States.140 Mary is shown in the WPA Death index with an age of '0' [birth and death in 1907]. Her 1907 burial permit gives her age as 82.
Mary may have been married twice. The 1860 Census is a bit confusing. The Haughts were residing in Crosby Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio. Mary is shown as being only a year older than John, although she was five years his senior. There are four children listed: Linda E. [15, b. c 1845], Sarah J. [12, b. c 1848], James H. [4, b. c 1856] and Margaret [2, b. c 1858]. Sarah is listed with the surname Nichelson. The elder Linda is listed as Haught.

The Nichelson surname, plus the gap of eight years between the ages of Sarah and James suggests an earlier marriage for Mary. Also John Haught was enumerated with his parents in 1850.

Julia was born in Clinton Co., Ohio. At 28 she married George Pugh in 1853. He was six years her junior. They had five children by the time George went off to serve in the Civil War.

According to the reminiscences of daughter Carrie Pugh, her father George returned home from the Civil War to find Julia dying from typhoid fever and four small children to care for.

Following Julia's death, George remarried and raised a second family. The children from his first marriage seem to have been estranged from their step-mother and father.
Julia A. Crousore and George Pugh were married on 29 Dec 1853 in Howard Co., Indiana.10 George Pugh was born circa 24 Mar 1831 in Indiana.157 He died on 18 Jan 1895 at the age of 63 in St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri, United States.157 63 y 9 m 24 d

George Pugh and Julia A. Crousore had the following children:

Simmons160,162165, son of James Morris Simmons and Hester Jane Moore, was born on 31 Jan 1828 in probably Warren Co., Ohio.166167 He died on 2 Aug 1909 at the age of 81 in Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.165166 He was buried after 2 Aug 1909 in Sharpsville Cemetery, Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.168 Most of the information available on the Simmons family comes from the obituary of John Simmons which appeared in the "Tipton Daily Tribune" on Wednesday, August 4, 1909.
"John T. Simmons, son of James and Hester Simmons was born in Ohio, January 31, 1828, and passed from this life August 2, 1909, at the venerable age of 81 years, six month, and two days old.

He was married in Howard County, Ind. to Miss Edith Crousour, June 24, 1849, and to them was given eleven children, five of whom with the faithfull wife, preceded him to the grave. The surviving children are: Mrs. Mima Crail, of Chicago; Mrs. Jane Plake, Sam M., and W., of Manilla, P.I., and Charles of Sharpsville, Ind. He leaves 40 grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Two brothers are yet living, Samuel of Camden, Ind. and Jacob of Gordon, Wis.

His boyhood was spent in Ohio, but when seventeen years of age, he came to Indiana, with his parents. In 1867 he moved to Sharpsville with his family, where he has been an honored citizen. Uncle John, as he has long been familiarly called, has passed through his share of troubles that come to all humanity, and through all has preserved a blameless life, doing good to all men as he has had opportunity, with never a harsh word of censure for any who had gone astray, but always extending a helping hand to lead them back to paths of restitude.

His family married off and all found homes outside of Sharpsville, excepting his son, Charles, who settled here, and with whom Uncle John has lived continuously for twenty years in peaceful harmony. To the daughter-in-law, Mrs. Allie Simmons he was a kind father and wise counselor, and she has indeed been a loving daughter to him. The two granddaughters, LoLttie [??] and Goldie, will miss dear grandpa without whom their homecomings will never be so happy. There were never any but kindly words and loving deeds to remember while this home circle is broken and the son, daughter, and grandchildren will pass many lonely hours, let us remember that Grandpa is at rest - he will never suffer pain again, but will be ready, with outstretched arms and that same kindly, loving smile we know so well on earth to greet us when we, too, hear our Savior call. "It is enough, come up higher." "

John Simmons was a farmer, and according to census records, lived next to Edith's parents. Later on he worked at the local sawmill. After Edith died in 1877, John depended on Mima to manage the household and help look after her three younger brothers, Sam, Charles, and John W., until she married in 1881. After Charles married, John moved in with him.

Charles and Allie, and Edith are buried next to one another in the Sharpsville Cemetery. A "John Simons" according to county cemetery records is buried there in an unmarked grave. This is likely John Simmons.

John T. Simmons and Edith Crousore had the following children:

71.  William Crousore170171 (Jacob-3, John-2, Nicholas-1) was born about 1832 in Rush Co., Indiana, United States.101 He died on 26 Apr 1906 at the age of 74 in Woodward Co., Oklahoma Territory, United States.170 William Crousore was probably born in Rush County, Indiana about 1832. [This year is consistant with his given age on various documents in his pension file.] He resided on his parents' farms in Rush, Delaware and Howard Counties until he enlisted in the 130th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in 1863 and returned to the family farm after the war.
William married widow Mary Browning Lewis in 1866. They had three children,
Charles, George and Ida Mae. Mary brought to the family four children from her first marriage to Moses Lewis, John, Isaac, Sarah and Amy.
By 1873 William had relocated his family to McPherson Co., Kansas. This included his parents and young cousin, Albert Pugh. Mary died sometime prior to 1874; possibly during childbirth in 1872. The 1874-75 Assessment for McPherson Co. showed the William 'Crousoar' household with 1 male over 21, 2 males under 21 and 2 females under 21.

The 1874/5 assessment and 1875 McPherson Co. census bring up questions as to the make up of William's household. If the four children in the 1874/5 assessment were the youngest four in William's care [Amy Lewis and the three Crousore youngsters: Charles, George and Ida Mae] then his three eldest step-children [John, Isaac and Sarah Lewis] may have been enroute from Indiana. The 1875 state census further complicates matters as John Lewis and Ida Mae Crousore are missing from the household.

William was among the residents of McPherson Co. whose names appeared on a Certificate of Levy of School Tax for District #15 dated 13 August 1874 and again on 12 August 1875.

William was 5'6" tall with light complexion, red hair and blue eyes. He could not read or write.

William Crousore served as a private with Company A, 130th Indiana Infantry. He enlisted on 14 December 1863 at Kokomo, Indiana for a three year term.
While serving in the Atlanta Campaign on about 20 July 1864 [shortly before the Battle of Jonesboro], Crousore was shot in the right foot. The wound caused him pain for the rest of his life and disabled him with paralysis of the right side. The 130th was in action at Kingston, NC on about 8 April 1865, where he received a wound in the right ankle. [In some of the documents in his pension file, this wound is referred to as being "alleged."] There are also references to a wound in his left knee. William was mustered out on 2 December 1865 at Indianapolis, but had been home on furlough since 2 November. William suffered total paralysis of his right side from head to foot from about 1879 on. He frequently had to be carted to his medical examinations in a wagon lined with a feather bed. He had to be helped, as one doctor put it, with "calls to nature."
William Crousore's pension file offers a good accounting of his whereabouts during the last 40 years of his life.

13 September 1899: Moscow, Woodward Co., Oklahoma Territory
11 August 1903: Moscow, Woodward Co., Oklahoma Territory [received $12 per month, paralysis of right leg, hard of hearing.]

Following his death on 26 April 1906, William was buried in the military section of Elwood Cemetery, Woodward Co., Oklahoma Territory [Sec. 1 Block 44 Space 4]. His marker reads "Wm. Crowsore - Co. A - Ind. Inf."

William Crousore and Mary Browning were married on 18 Mar 1866 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.172 Mary Browning173, daughter of William Browning and Sarah Evelyn Compton, was born circa 1834 in Ohio.174 She died in 1872–1873 at the age of 38 in Probably Indiana or Kansas.173 The exact date of Mary's death has not been found. Her youngest child, Ida Mae, was born in 1872 and there was no female over 21 in the family in the 1874-75 assessment for McPherson Co., Kansas. Therefore, Mary could have died from complications during childbirth in 1872, died during the trip to Kansas or shortly after the Crousores arrived in Kansas.

William Crousore and Mary Browning had the following children:

                              i.   Charles "Charlie" Crousore was born on 28 Jan 1867 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.175 He died on 7 Jun 1935 at the age of 68 in La Junta, Otero, Colorado, United States.175
ii.   George Crousore was born on 28 Sep 1868 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.175 He died on 16 Nov 1947 at the age of 79 in La Junta, Otero, Colorado, United States.175
iii.   Ida Mae Crousore was born on 6 May 1872 in Howard Co., Indiana, United States.175 She died on 10 Jun 1946 at the age of 74 in Kutch, Elbert, Colorado, United States.175
