1. John Crail1–2 was born about 1775 in Maryland.2–3 He died circa 1816 at the age of 41 in Campbell Co., Kentucky, United States. 1–2 John was the eldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth, probably born about 1775 in Maryland. Some sources say Pennsylvania was his birthplace.
He and brother Wilson were in Mason Co., KY by 1792. John applied for a tavern license on 3 December 1799 in Pendleton Co. He was an ensign in the 21st Regiment of the Cornstalk Militia on 31 May 1800 for Campbell Co., KY.
Crail had married Rachel Stephens on 25 October 1799 in Pendleton Co. Thomas Crail and Lewis Stephens signed the marriage bond. They had a son, Daniel, born in 1801. Rachel probably died in childbirth.
John was on the delinquent tax lists for Pendleton Co. on 3 February and 7 October of that year. He was listed on the Pendleton tax rolls for 1800 and 1804.
John married for the second time on 11 April 1802 to Sarah "Sallie" Webb in Campbell Co., KY. They had at least three children: Sarah [b. c1803], Edward [b. c1805] and Lucinda [b. 1 Nov 1814]. There may have been two other children, Ceph and George, suggested by Find A Grave.
The Crails were in Cincinnati in 1805, when John placed a newspaper notice advertising for a saddle tree maker's apprentice. He purchased land in Hamilton Co. on 6 December.
John only received one dollar from his father's estate in 1809, unless he returned the power of attorney and deed to 336 acres near Chillicothe, OH.
Apparently, the Crails had marital problems for a time. On 13 June 1810, the Liberty Hall newspaper [Hamilton Co.] reported that Sallie Crail had left John's "bed and board."
From 1813-15, John was on the Campbell Co. tax lists. On 10 March 1817, Thomas Moore was appointed guardian of Edward Crail, aged 12. On 2 Nov 1819, Lucinda Crail was apprenticed as a seamstress, with the consent of her mother, Sarah Moore, to Thomas and Ann McGregor of Newport until 22 Nov 1832, when she would turn 18.
Although numerous sources give John's death as 3 July 1839 in Campbell Co., the above records suggest that John probably died in 1816 in Campbell Co. Sallie may have married the Thomas Moore who was guardian for Edward Crail.
Sarah evidently married Edward Gallagan on 8 Feb 1828. Gallagan told the Campbell Co. court that he had cared for a Sarah Crail who had died in 1827. This was probably Sallie.
