A Possible Breakthrough on the Joyce Family?

One of many ancestors missing a concrete place of origin is Walter Joyce, who married Elizabeth Low in Marshfield, MA. County Galway, Ireland and Gloucestershire, England have been offered up as possible places of birth for Walter. 1645 and 1650 have been suggested years of birth.

I came across a website on the settlers of Swan Island, Maine. [www.swansisland.org] A John Joyce was one of the early settlers. His lineage has been traced back to Walter and Elizabeth.

The site has Walter born in Gloucestershire, England in 1645 or 1650. Walter's parents are given as Reverend James Joyce and his wife, Elizabeth [no maiden name given.]

Unfortunately, the folks who compiled the family lineage made the same mistake with the Low family that I did. They have Elizabeth as the daughter of John Low and Elizabeth Stoddard, rather than John Low and Elizabeth Howland.

I caught my error a few months ago and posted the correction to the blog and my RootsMagic software.

Was Rev. Joyce Walter's father? Only further research will tell.

Note: Some Ancestry trees show Hosea Joyce or John Joyce as Walter's father. Documentation lacking.
