4.  John Latham Jr.^1–2 (John-2, Thomas-1) was born in 1554 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.⁴ John Latham, Jr. was the son of John, Sr. and Joan. if Elizabeth [first wife] died before 1557.

John Latham Jr. and _______ [Latham] were married about 1573 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.⁶ _______ [Latham] was born in 1563 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.

 

5.  Joan / Jane Latham² (John-2, Thomas-1) was born circa 1541 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² She died before 6 Apr 1620 at the age of 79 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² Joan / Jane may have been one person or two. John referred to his daughter Jane and Nicholas to his sister Joan, suggesting that they were one person.

Joan / Jane Latham and Nicholas Margetts were married on 19 Nov 1565 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² Nicholas Margetts was born (date unknown).

 

6.  Elizabeth Latham^2,5 (John-2, Thomas-1) was born circa 1543 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.²

Elizabeth Latham and John Gurrey were married on 19 Nov 1565 in Rushden, Northamptonshire, England.² John Gurrey was born (date unknown).

7.  Oliver Latham² (John-2, Thomas-1) was born circa 1545 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² He died after 1598 at the age of 53 in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England.² Oliver was born about 1545 to John and Elizabeth Latham. The name of his wife is not yet known. The Lathams had eight children. Oliver was living in 1598, when he was fined for "nibbling away at common land" in Lowick.

i. Margery Latham² was born circa 1570–1573 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² She died circa Jul 1582 at the age of 12 in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England.² She was buried on 24 Jul 1582 in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England.²

ii. Simon Latham² was born circa 1570–1573 in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England.² He died on 22 Jul 1642–19 May 1649 at the age of 72 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² Simon married twice. [1] Frances, buried 10 Jan 1626/7 Bletsoe; [2] Elizabeth Pierce at Bletsoe on 27 Feb 1626/7.

9 iii. Lewis Latham, born abt Oct 1574, Lowick, Northamptonshire, England; married Elizabeth [Latham], bef 4 Jun 1607, Kempston, Bedfordshire, England; married Winifred Downes, abt 1621, England; died 6 May 1655–15 May 1655, Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.

iv. William Latham² was born in Dec 1576 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² He was baptized on 24 Dec 1576 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² He died circa Aug 1632 at the age of 55 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.² William was buried on 20 Aug 1632 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.²

v. Thomas Latham² was born in Sep 1580 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² He was baptized on 24 Sep 1580 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.²

vi. Margery Latham² was born in Dec 1582 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² She was baptized on 28 Dec 1582 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.²

8.  Rev. Nicholas Latham^2,5 (John-2, Thomas-1) was born in 1547–1548 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.^2,5 He died on 4 Aug 1620 at the age of 73 in Northamptonshire, England.^2,5

Rev. Nicholas Latham and Marie Foster² were married in 1599–1600 in Northamptonshire, England.^2,5 Marie Foster⁵ was also known as Marie Latham.⁵

 

Fourth Generation

 

9.  Lewis Latham^1–2 (Oliver-3, John-2, Thomas-1) was born about Oct 1574 in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England.^2,7–8 He died on 6 May 1655–15 May 1655 at the age of 80 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.^2,7–8 He was buried on 15 May 1655 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.^2,8 Lewis Latham was a member of the household and Sergant Falconer to Prince Henry in 1612. He held the same position under King Charles I in 1625. On 18 August 1627, Lewis was advanced to the position of Sergeant of the Hawks.

A portrait of Lewis Latham was brought to New England by his daughter, Frances Dungan Clarke. In the upper left-hand  corner of the portrait is the arms used by Philip de Latham.

Lewis Latham and Elizabeth [Latham] were married before 4 Jun 1607 in Kempston, Bedfordshire, England.^2,7 [Clarke Gen. says c1608] Elizabeth [Latham] was born about 1590 in Bedfordshire, England.⁷ She died about 14 Sep 1620 at the age of 30 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.⁷ She was buried on 14 Sep 1620 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England.⁷ Elizabeth was also known as Elizabeth Latham.⁷

11.  Egofayth Latham² (Oliver-3, John-2, Thomas-1) was born in Mar 1589/90 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² She was baptized on 20 Mar 1589/90 in Bletsoe, Bedfordshire, England.² She died circa 6 Jan 1643/4 at the age of 53 in Quarrington, Lincolnshire, England.² Egofayth was buried on 6 Jan 1643/4 in Quarrington, Lincolnshire, England.²

Egofayth Latham and Thomas Inman were married circa 31 Jul 1608 in England.² Thomas Inman was born (date unknown).

 

Fifth Generation

  

12.  Frances Latham¹⁰ (Lewis-4, Oliver-3, John-2, Thomas-1) was born on 15 Feb 1608/9 in Kempston, Bedfordshire, England.⁷ She died in Sep 1677 at the age of 68 in Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island.⁷ She was buried in Sep 1677 in Newport Cemetery, Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island.⁷ Frances was also known as Frances Dungan.¹¹ She was also known as Frances Clarke.¹² She was also known as Frances Vaughn.¹³ Frances Latham, daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth, was born in Kempston in 1608/9. She married three times. Her first husband, William Dungan, died in London in 1636. It was with her second husband, Jeremy Clarke,  that Frances and her children went to America.

The Clarkes settled in what would become Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Clarke became president of the colony in 1648. Clarke died in 1652, leaving seven minor children. Frances next married Rev. William Vaughn.

Nine governors [7 RI, 1 WA] can claim direct descent from Frances, as can four RI deputy or lieutenant governors. Another seven governors or lieutenant governors can claim descent by marriage, including her 2nd husband. As a result, Frances gained the nickname "Mother of Governors."

Frances Latham and William Dungan were married on 27 Aug 1629 in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, Middlesex, England.¹¹ William Dungan^1,11 was born about 1606 in Ireland or England.¹¹ He was baptized on 15 Jun 1628 in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, Middlesex, England.¹¹ He died on 18 Sep 1636 at the age of 30 in London, Middlesex, England.¹⁴ William was buried on 20 Sep 1636 in St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, Middlesex, England.¹¹ It was long assumed that William Dungan was the son of Thomas Dungan of Lincoln's Inn and a native of County Kildare, Ireland as outlined in Alfred Rudolph Justice's Ancestry of Jeremy Clarke of Rhode Island and Dungan Genealogy [Franklin Publishing Co., Philadelphia, PA, 1922, HeritageQuest On-line]. This noble Irish lineage has never been verified and recent research suggests that the lineage is incorrect. In his book, Justice went so far to admit that there was no proof of the ancestry. The parentage of William, therefore, is not yet known.

William Dungan was born about 1606/7 and baptized as an adult on 15 June 1628. William was a perfumer in London. He married, on 27 June 1629 at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields, London, Frances Latham. The baptisms of all four of their children appear in that church's records.

In his will dated 13 September 1636, William left each of his children "three score and ten pounds apiece, to be paid unto them when they shall attaine to their full ages, or daye of marriage." After debts and funeral expenses were paid, the remainder of his estate was to go to his wife Frances, who was named executrix.

His widow was assessed and paid taxes between 29 April 1636 and 16 April 1637. At the time, Frances was residing at Covent Garden, East side of Bedford Street.

About a year after William's death, Frances married Jeremy Clarke.

15 iv. Thomas Dungan, born abt 1634/5, St. Martin's-in-the-Fields Parish, London, Middlesex, England; married Elizabeth Weaver, 1663, Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island; died 1688, Cold Springs, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

 

Frances Latham and Jeremiah Clarke were married about 1637 in London, Middlesex, England.¹² Jeremiah Clarke was born about 1605 in East Farleigh, Kent, England. [based on baptismal date] He was baptized on 1 Dec 1605 in East Farleigh, Kent, England.¹⁵ He died in Jan 1651/2 at the age of 47 in Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island.¹⁶

Latham Family Update: Ge. 1 & 2

First Generation

 

1.  Thomas Latham^1–2 died in Oct 1558 in Northamptonshire, England.^2–3 Thomas Latham, according to J. Hulbert Glover's book "Kingsthorpiana", was Keeper of the Game Park in Moulton and Kingsthorpe. He drew complaints from poachers who complained that Conies [hares] were destroying their grain crops. In depositions taken on 26 April 1542, it was claimed that Latham forbade the use of longbows in the fields and confiscated them. Also the Game Keeper killed a mastiff belonging to Richard Humphrey.

The Lathams had been in Nortampton for more than a generation. James Latham preceded Thomas as underkeeper of Moulton Park from about 1485 until about 1518. In 1541, Richard Andrews filed a suit against Thomas' two sons and kinsman, Wylde Latham.

A Thomas Latham of Brigstock appeared as a tenant in the manor court rolls
of Berkwell, Warwickshire from 1593 - 1620. He was the Thomas Latham the Elder, who appeared on the Brigstock manor court rolls, born about 1532/3. Thomas the Elder arrived in Brigstock by 1586. Thomas left his estate to wife Isabel in his 1623 will. On 3 October 1593, Alice Steane conveyed a messuage in Berkswell called Raves Green House. Thomas conveyed a cottage and close called Lydiates Croft to his son Simon Latham alias Pye on that date. Thomas and Simon appeared in Berkswell records off and on until 27 April 1620.

The 1551 will of Richard Latham named his wife, Alice, but none of his children. Thomas might have been the son of Richard. Another Thomas Latham resided at Ashley, Northamptonshire and died there in 1581/2. It is not known how, or if, he was related to Thomas of Kingsthorpe.

In his will dated 11 September 1558 and proved Novenber 1588, Latham named his children, Rowland, Oliver, John, Elizabeth, and Thomas, as well as other relatives. Wife Elizabeth and sons, Rowland and Oliver were named executors. After Rowland and Oliver were named "the next of the Latham blood forever." This included John Latham; daughter Elizabeth Dickinson; Edward Chatton and Helen Chatton; Peter Dickinson; Mary Story; sister Joan Tynes and her children; son Thomas Latham; grandson Thomas Latham, younger son of Thomas; Matthew Story; kinsman Sir William Roote; John Layoe of Northampton; Thomas Dickinson and Bridget Bickinson.

The relationship to the Chattons, Storys, Roote and Layoe is not specified. Presumably the Dickinsons are related to daughter Elizabeth.

 

Thomas Latham and Elizabeth [Latham]² were married.² Elizabeth [Latham] was born about 1479 in Culworth, Northamptonshire, England.

 

Thomas Latham and Elizabeth [Latham] had the following children:

 

i. Rowland Latham² was born in 1510–1515 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.² Rowland was the eldest of the four Latham brothers.

ii. Oliver Latham² was born in 1510–1520 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.² He died circa 26 Nov 1572 at the age of 62 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² Oliver was born before  1520. His name appeared in the records of 1564-65 in a case involving the harboring of sray animals in the vicinity of Brigstock. It is believed he had died before 26 November 1572, when his brother Simon was appointed to the post of keeper of Little Park at Brigstock. Oliver had previously held that post.

iii. Thomas Latham Jr.² was born in 1515–1520 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.²

2 iv. Elizabeth Latham, born 1515–1520, Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England; married Peter Dickinson.

3 v. John Latham Sr., born abt 1520–1522, Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England; married Joan [Latham], abt 1553, Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England; married Elizabeth [Latham], ca 1540, Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England; died ca 15 Apr 1580, Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.

 

Second Generation

 

2.  Elizabeth Latham² (Thomas-1) was born in 1515–1520 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.²

 

Elizabeth Latham and Peter Dickinson² were married.² Peter Dickinson was born (date unknown).

  

3.  John Latham Sr.^1–2 (Thomas-1) was born about 1520–1522 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.^2,4–5 He died circa 15 Apr 1580 at the age of 60 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.^2,4 Latham was born about 1520 [1522 in some sources] and was a resident of Kingsthorpe by 1541. His wife, Elizabeth, was cited in Brigstock on 2 May 1546 for breaking the assize of bread and ale. John served as a juror at the manor court regularly from 5 October 1557 until 14 October 1577. His named appeared on the subsidy rolls in March 1547. William Gardiner challenged Latham's right to the tenement in the manor court in 1578 and 1579. The family held onto the house and the land.

John Latham was underkeeper of the Great Park of Brigstock, Northamptonshire. It was part of Rockingham forest and a royal manor. In 1570 he was one of those commissioned to survey Pountfrete Park, containing 700 acres and 595 deer.

John Latham's first wife was Elizabeth, daughter of Joan, the wife of Thomas Gurre alias Bocher. She was naed so in Gurre's 1557 will. John and Elizabeth had either four or five children: Jane, Joan, Elizabeth, Oliver and Nicholas. [John called his eldest daughter Jane in his will. Nicholas named his sister Joan Margetts in his will. It is possible that Jane and Joan were one and the same.]

Two children, John [the younger] and Morris were probably Elizabeth's, but may have been Joan's.

John left an unrecorded will naming his wife, Joan, as sole executrix to his estate. Joan received his tenement on Hall Hill. Youngest son Thomas [by Joan] received the remainder, as per the custom of the manor. Son John got a cottage on Hall Hill. Son Morris was left the lease on a house past the churchyard on the waterside [acquired from Nicholas Ashton in 1578].

John died by 15 April 1580, when Joan and Thomas were named as tenants on the Latham property. Joan remarried on 21 April 1582 to Thomas Montagu. Joan was still alive on 18 January 1597 and residing on the Brigstock tenement.

John Latham Sr. and Joan [Latham] were married about 1553 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.^4–5 Joan [Latham] was born between 1524 and 1526 in Kingsthorpe or Culworth, Northamptonshire, England.⁴ She was also known as Joan Montagu.⁵ She was also known as Joan Latham.^4–5

 

John Latham and Joan [Latham] had the following children:

ii. Morris / Maurice Latham^2,4 was born about 1556 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.^4–5 The identity of the mother of Morris Latham is open to question. If John Latham's first wife Elizabeth died prior to 1557, then Joan would have been his mother, if not, then Joan was his mother.

Morris was still living as of 3 October 1592.

iii. Thomas Latham⁴ was born about 1558 in Kingsthorpe, Northamptonshire, England.^4–5

 

John Latham Sr. and Elizabeth [Latham]² were married circa 1540 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.^2,5 Elizabeth [Latham]^2,5 was born in 1520–1525 in Northamptonshire, England.² She died circa 1557 at the age of 37 in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, England.² Elizabeth was referred to in the past tense in her step-father's will in 1557. If Elizabeth was indeed dead by 1557, then Joan was the mother of Morris. She may have been the mother of John and Morris.

A Change in the Latham Line

Based primarily on Alfred Randolph Justice's Ancestry of Jeremy Clarke of Rhode Island and Dungan Genealogy, Lewis Latham [father of Frances Latham, "Mother of Governors"] was believed to be descended from the Lancashire de Latham family. His father was John Latham "the younger." Dating back to the 1100s or earlier, the line was as follows:

Independence Day Tribute to Ancestors

A special thanks today to my direct and collateral ancestors who served the cause of Independence, and to their brothers who may have served - and to the wives and families who supported them.

Remembering the 4th.

About this time in 1776, the finishing touches were being put to the Declaration of Independence. Massachusetts militia had already engaged British regulars at Lexington and Concord. The Battle of Bunker [Breed's] Hill had been waged. The British had evacuated Boston. The fledgling Continental Army had a commander-in-chief, General George Washington.

Over the next several days the Declaration would be read to Washington's troops and in towns and villages in the 13 colonies.

By August, the British Army was on the way to attack and occupy New York. Washington was preparing for the defense of Long Island and more troops were pouring into New York to join Washington.

The Continental Army would face a series of devastating defeats at Long Island and other sites in New York. The Marylanders lost 250 of 400 men in an effort to cover the Army's escape from Long Island. Washington would retreat across the Jerseys and across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania.
Casualties, desertions and expired enlistments reduced the Continental Army to a shadow of itself as 1776 came to a close.

Washington should have surrendered and the dream of Independence should have ended by Christmas. Instead, Christmas would mark a turning point and keep the dream alive. It would take place with the crossing of the Delaware River and an attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton, West Jersey.

The Jones Family

The Jones family story is a bit muddled. The available resources are inconsistent with spouses and children.

 

First Generation

 

1.  Robert Jones¹ was born in 1565–1570 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.¹ Caversham parish registers did not begin until  October 1597. In addition to Robert, believed to be the father of Robert of Hingham.

Robert had three other sons: John, who married Jane Garnford, believed to be Margaret's sister, Symon, died young, and Silvanus.

There were four others with the Jones surname in Caversham.
[1] Roger, whose son Thomas settled at Hingham about 1636.
[2] Richard, whose son Richard also settled at Hingham about 1636.
[3] Lewis
[4] William

 

Robert Jones had the following child:

Second Generation

 

2.  Robert Jones^1–2 (Robert-1) was born circa 1596 in Caversham, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom.^1–2 He died on 20 Apr 1688–27 Jan 1691/2 at the age of 92 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 Robert Jones was born about 1596 in Caversham, Berkshire, England. He married Margaret Garnford on 30 April 1621 in Caversham. Margaret probably died before the family ventured to New England.

Robert married 2nd, possibly, the widow ________ [Alexander] Curtis, the mother of two girls, Elizabeth and Jane, prior to departing for America. Robert, his wife,  children and step-children arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts Bay about 1636.

The family removed to Rehoboth in 1644, but returned to Hingham later on.

Elizabeth and Jane Curtis gave their step-father, Robert Jones of Hingham, power of attorney on 4 December 1646 to handle a legacy left them by their grandmother, Jane Alexander of Reading, Oxfordshire.

Robert's second wife died by 1660. He married for a 3rd to to a woman named Elizabeth, who bore him two children.

Jones lived in Hingham Center "over the river" near Turkey Hill. Robert, his son Joseph and Joseph Jr. were the only Joneses taxed at Hingham in 1680-81.
Robert Jones, planter, made his will on 20 April 1688. He named his sons Joseph, John and Benjamin the Elder; daughter Sarah Belknap, step-daughter Jane Collier; children of his son Robert, deceased; son Benjamin the Younger and wife Elizabeth. The will was proved 27 January 1691/2.

Elizabeth died on 25 September 1712.

Margaret Garnford died in 1630–1633 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.²

 

Robert Jones and Margaret Garnford had the following children:

 

i. Robert Jones Jr.¹ was born in 1622 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.¹ He died Killed in skirmish with Indians. on 24 Jun 1675 at the age of 53 in Swansea, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.¹

ii. John Jones^1–2 was born in 1624/5 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.^1–2 He was baptized on 9 Jan 1624/5 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.^1–2 He died in May 1720 at the age of 95 in Marshfield, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 There is speculation that, because John lived to be 95, the John born in 1624/5 died young and a second son of that named died in 1720.

iii. Benjamin Jones¹ was born in Jul 1627 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.¹ He was baptized circa 24 Jul 1627 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.¹ He died circa 24 Sep 1724 at the age of 97 in Caversham, Berkshire, England, Great Britain.¹

iv. Joseph Jones^1–2 was born in 1628 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.^1–2 He was baptized on 30 Nov 1628 in Caversham, Berkshire, England, Great Britain.¹ He died on 18 Jul 1714 at the age of 86 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2

3 v. Sarah Jones, born ca 1630, Caversham, Berkshire, England; married Samuel Belknap/Beltoft, ca 1652, Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts; died 18 Apr 1689, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

 

Robert Jones and _________ Curtis² were married in 1634–1635 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.^1–2 _________ Curtis² died circa 1660 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.² Based on the fact that her daughters' grandmother was an Alexander, that was probably Widow Curtis' maiden name.

 

Robert Jones and _________ Curtis had the following child:

 

i. Benjamin Jones^1–2 was born in Mar 1638 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 He died on 12 Jan 1717/8 at the age of 79 in Bristol, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 It is pure speculation that Benjamin "the Elder" was the son of Robert Jones' 2nd wife. If the first Benjamin died young and his mother died before the family arrived in New England, he fits.

 

Robert Jones and Elizabeth [Jones]2² were married circa 1661 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 Elizabeth [Jones]2² died on 25 Sep 1712 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.²

 

Robert Jones and Elizabeth [Jones]2 had the following children:

 

i. Elizabeth Jones² was born in Aug 1662 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 She was baptized in Aug 1662 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 Elizabeth was not mentioned in her father's 1688 will. She presumably died young.

ii. Benjamin "the Younger" Jones^1–2 was born in Aug 1666 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 He was baptized on 27 Aug 1666 in Hingham, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2 He died on 29 Jan 1703/4 at the age of 37 in Massachusetts Bay, British America.^1–2

 

 

Third Generation

 

3.  Sarah Jones¹ (Robert-2, Robert-1) was born circa 1630 in Caversham, Berkshire, England.^1,3 She died on 18 Apr 1689 at the age of 59 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^1,3

Sarah Jones and Samuel Belknap/Beltoft¹ were married circa 1652 in Hingham, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts.^1,3 Samuel Belknap/Beltoft⁴, son of Abraham Belknap/Beltoft and Mary Stallion/Stallon, was born on 16 Mar 1627/8 in North Weald, Essex, England.^3,5 He died on 11 Nov 1701 at the age of 73 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.³ Samuel was baptized 16 March 1627 in North Weald, Essex, England, parents Abraham and Marie. [The name in the entry appears to be Immannuel, but there is no record of Abraham having a son Immannuel.]

Samuel may have spent time in Easthampton, Long Island as one of that name owned land there on 5 July 1653. He was in Salem by August of that year when the eldest of the Belknap children was born.

Belknap had a house in Salem on land lying between the present Essex St. [near the corner of Beckford St.] and the North River. He sold land on 20 February 1665/6 to Edward Gaskyn. He was of Malden in 1671 and took the oath of allegiance at Haverhill on 28 November 1677. In 1696 Samuel conveyed land to sons Ebenezer and Abraham.

The aforementioned pedigree charts and IGIs give Samuel's death as 11 November 1701. The Belknap article says he was alive as late as 31 August 1731 according to one of the recorded deeds. If so, Belknap would have been about 103. It is possible, but would more likely be his son Samuel.

 

Samuel Belknap/Beltoft and Sarah Jones had the following children:

 

i. Mary Belknap/Beltoft was born on 17 Aug 1653 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁶

Sarah Belknap/Beltoft, born 14 Oct 1656, Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America; married Nathaniel Singletary, 22 Dec 1673, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts; married John Page Jr., 21 May 1700, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts; died 3 Jan 1756, Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

iii. Abraham Belknap/Beltoft was born on 4 Jun 1660 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁶

iv. Samuel Belknap/Beltoft Jr. was born on 1 May 1662 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁶

v. Ebenezer Belknap/Beltoft was born on 16 Dec 1667 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁶

vi. Joseph Belknap/Beltoft was born on 25 Mar 1672 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁷

vii. Patience Belknap/Beltoft was born on 17 Sep 1675 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts Bay, British America.⁷
