I was doing a search for Catherine O'Neil Crail's "probable" immigration record. I tend to favor the 25 August 1851 arrival aboard the Yorkshire from Liverpool, England. It has the best fit with family lore.
I also did a search on one of the elusive sons [David and John]. David was born about 1862 in Indiana. The last record I had for him was the 1870 census. A David Crail also turns up in Douglas Co., Colorado in 1880.
He is 18, check. Born in Indiana, check. Father born in Ohio, check. Mother born in England, oops! Three out of four isn't bad. His mother did reside in England for awhile to earn passage to America, so that could explain the error. His mother would have thrashed him good for labeling her English, however.
What lured an 18 year-old to Colorado? Gold? He was listed as a laborer with a number of other residents in the same household.
Could David have left the family home in Indiana for the more adventurous west?
