First Generation

 

1.  Robert Maverick¹ was born circa 1524 in possibly Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.² He died circa 14 Nov 1573 at the age of 49 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.¹ He was buried on 14 Nov 1573 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.¹ Robert Maverick was clerk [cleric] of Awliscombe.

Robert Maverick and _______ Bull were married circa 1549 in England.² _______ Bull^1–2 was born circa 1528 in England.² Robert's wife is shown in many sources as "Ms. Bull." No marriage record for the couple has been uncovered. Son Peter was frequently listed as "Maverick alias Bull" or "Bull alias Maverick." The assumption may have been made from this that his mother's maiden name was Bull.

Second Generation

 

2.  Peter Maverick³ (Robert-1) was born about 1550 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.³ He died before 3 Feb 1616/7 at the age of 67 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.³ Peter Maverick [alias Bull] was a clerk [cleric] and vicar of Awliscombe, Devonshire, England. He was ordained as a deacon on 15 January 1673/4 and then ordained as a priest on 17 March of that same year. Maverick was admitted to the perpetual vicarage of Awliscombe on 3 November 1580. On 19 May 1612 he brought suit against William Champneys of Yarnscombe, Devonshire, England. Maverick claimed that they had an agreement for a 99 year lease for a messuge and lands in Awliscombe, based on the three lives of his son Nathaniel, and grandsons, Samuel and Elias Mavericke (the sons of Reverend John Maverick). Peter Maverick further claimed that Champney changed the terms of the deal in order to make a better deal with a man named Harris. [This suit was vital in establishing family ties.]
Peter was identified as the eldest brother of Radford Maverick in his 1622 will.

When John Hassard was instituted vicar of Awliscombe on 3 February 1616/7, it was noted that Peter had died per necum - a violent death.  

Peter Maverick and Dorothy Tucke were married on 7 Nov 1577 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.³ Dorothy Tucke³, daughter of Robert Tucke and Alice [Tucke], was born in 1556 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.² She died after 1588 at the age of 32 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.^2–3 Simmons Family pedigree charts give Dorothy's death as "after 1578." Both Simmons and the Register's Maverick article [April 1915] list her children, the last of whom, Marie, was baptized on 4 August 1588. Undoubtedly, Dorothy died sometime after 1588.

Third Generation

 

3.  Reverend John Maverick⁴ (Peter-2, Robert-1) was born in Dec 1578 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.^2,4 He was baptized on 28 Dec 1578 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.⁴ He died on 3 Feb 1635/6 at the age of 57 in Dorchester, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^2,4 John Maverick was born in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England in 1578. He entered Exeter College at Oxford on 24 October 1595. He was described as aged 18, a clergyman's son. John received his B.A. degree on 8 July 1599 and his Master's degree on 7 July 1603. He had already been ordained at Exeter as deacon and priest on 29 July 1597.
It is possible that he was curate to his Uncle Radford at Ilsington since he was married there in 1600. His bride, Mary Gye, had been entrusted to the care of Radford Maverick at an early age by her father.

Reverend Maverick was inducted at Silverton, Devonshire to the rectory of Beaworthy, Devonshire on 30 August 1615 and remained there until he resigned shortly before emigrating to New England. During March 1629/30 John was chosen one of the teachers of the Puritan church that was organized at Plymouth, England. On 29 March 1629/30, John, Mary and their children boarded the Mary and John [part of the Winthrop fleet] for New England and arrived 30 May 1630.
Maverick took the oath as freeman on 18 May 1631 and served as minister at Dorchester until his death in 1635/6. Mary was still living in October of 1666.

Reverend John Maverick and Mary Gye were married on 28 Oct 1600 in Islington, Devonshire, England.^2,4–5 Mary Gye, daughter of Robert Gye and Grace Dowrish, was born about 1580 in Awliscombe, Devonshire, England.^2,5 She died after 9 Oct 1666 at the age of 86 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^2,5–6 Mary Gye was the youngest of Robert and Grace [Dowrish] Gye's eleven children. Following her mother's sudden death, Mary was given to the care of Rev. Radford Maverick, who raised the girl and provided for her education. Maveick presided at the marriage of Mary to his nephew John in 1600.
Many sources are unclear about the date of Grace Dowrish Gye's death. Some say she died "before 1604," others "in 1604." Mary's father placed her in the care of Radford Maverick at a very early age. It is most likely that Grace died while Mary was still in infancy, probably around 1580-1582.

 

John Maverick and Mary Gye had the following children:

 

                              i.   Samuel Maverick⁷ was born circa 1602 in Devonshire, England.^7–8 He died after 1669 at the age of 67 in New York City, New York.^7–8 Samuel preceded the rest of his family to New England, arriving on the Katherine in 1624. He settled at Winnissimet [Chelsea], Suffolk Co., Massachusetts. A devout Episcopalian, he grew discontented with the neighboring Puritan influence and returned to England to express his displeasure. Samuel arrived during the country's Civil War, so it took time to be heard. He returned in 1664 as a King's Commissioner with a charge from Charles II to settle affairs in New England and reduce Dutch presence in New Netherland. Maverick was influential in making New Netherland the colony of New York. He took up residence in New York City, where he died between 1669 and 1676. 

              4             ii.   Elias Maverick Sr., born abt 1604, Devonshire, England; married Anna Harris, ca 1634, Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; died 8 Sep 1684, Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.

                            iii.   Mary Maverick was born in Nov 1606 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.^7–8 She was baptized on 30 Nov 1606 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ She was buried on 6 Mar 1606/7 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷

                            iv.   Aaron Maverick⁷ was born circa Mar 1607/8 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ He was baptized on 6 Mar 1607/8 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ Aaron did not go to America with the rest of the family. Whether he died before 1630 or chose to remain in England is not known.

                             v.   Mary Maverick was born circa Jan 1609/10 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ She was baptized on 6 Jan 1609/10 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ She died after 1658 at the age of 48 in Barbados.⁷

                            vi.   Moses Maverick⁷ was born in Mar 1611–Jun 1611 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁸ He was baptized on 3 Nov 1611 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ He died on 28 Jan 1685/6 at the age of 74 in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts.⁸ Moses settled in Dorchester with his family, then moved to Salem and finally to Marblehead in 1635.

                           vii.   Abigail Maverick was born circa Mar 1613/4 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷ She was baptized on 20 Mar 1613/4 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England.⁷

                          viii.   Antipas Maverick⁷ was born circa 1619 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England?.⁷ He died on 2 Jul 1678 at the age of 59 in at sea.^7,9 Antipas moved to Kittery, York Co., Maine in 1652. He later resided in Exeter, Strafford Co., New Hampshire and on the Isle of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast, where he was a merchant. In 1678 Antipas fell out of a boat while intoxicated and drowned.

                            ix.   John Maverick Jr.⁷ was born circa 1621 in South Huish, Dorsetshire, England?.⁷ John Maverick, Jr. became a sailor and migrated to Barbados and finally South Carolina. There he became a member of the first colonial parliament.
John was the ancestor of Samuel Augustus Maverick who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in March 1836. Samuel was also noted for not following the tradition of branding his cattle. As a result, unbranded cattle became known as "mavericks."

 

Fourth Generation

 

4.  Elias Maverick Sr.^7,10 (John-3, Peter-2, Robert-1) was born about 1604 in Devonshire, England.² He died on 8 Sep 1684 at the age of 80 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.² Elias was about 26 when he accompanied his family to New England. He first lived at Winnissimet [Chelsea] near his brother Samuel. Elias was admitted to the church at Charlestown on 9 February 1632/3 and was made freeman 11 June 1633. He married Anna Harris about 1634. Anna was admitted to the Charlestown church on 7 October 1639.   Elias was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1654.
He made his will on 13 October 1681 and it was proved 6 November 1684. Elias died at Charlestown on 8 September 1684. Anna died on 7 September 1697 at Reading, where her daughters Sarah Walton and Ruth Smith lived.

Elias Maverick Sr. and Anna Harris were married circa 1634 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^2,11 Anna Harris, daughter of Thomas Harris and Elizabeth Hills \ Williams, was born about 1613 in probably Hatherup, Gloucestershire, England.¹¹ She died on 7 Sep 1697 at the age of 84 in Reading, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹¹

                              i.   John Maverick was born on 3 Feb 1635 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 He was baptized on 27 Feb 1635 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 He died before 27 Apr 1680 at the age of 45 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12

                             ii.   Abigail Maverick was born on 10 Aug 1637 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 She was baptized on 14 Aug 1637 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 She died on 1 Jan 1690 at the age of 52 in Beverly, Essex Co., Massachusetts.¹²

                            iii.   Elizabeth Maverick was born on 2 Jun 1639 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 She died on 22 Mar 1673/4 at the age of 34 in Haverhill, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^7,12

                            iv.   Sarah Maverick was born on 20 Feb 1640/1 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 She died on 10 Jun 1714 at the age of 73 in Reading, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^7,12

                             v.   Elias Maverick Jr. was born on 17 Mar 1643/4 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12 He died in Jul 1696 at the age of 52 in Barbados.⁷ He was buried on 4 Jul 1696 in Barbados.¹³

                            vi.   Peter Maverick was born circa 1645 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.⁷

                           vii.   James Maverick was born circa 1646 in Winnissimmett [Chelsea], Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.⁷ He died circa 1700 at the age of 54 in Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.⁷

                          viii.   Mary Maverick was born circa 1647 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts?.⁷ She died in South Carolina?.^7,12

                            ix.   Ruth Maverick was born circa 1654 in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts?.^7,12 She died on 27 Nov 1717 at the age of 63 in Reading, Essex Co., Massachusetts.^7,12

                             x.   Paul Maverick was born on 10 Jun 1657 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^7,12

              5            xi.   Rebecca Maverick, born 1 Jan 1659, Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; married George Thomas, abt 1677, Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; died aft 3 Nov 1696, Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts?.

5.  Rebecca Maverick (Elias-4, John-3, Peter-2, Robert-1) was born on 1 Jan 1659 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.^2,7,12 She died after 3 Nov 1696 at the age of 37 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts?.²

Rebecca Maverick and George Thomas were married about 1677 in Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts.² based on age of eldest child George Thomas^14–15, son of Evan Thomas and Jane [Thomas], was born about 1639 in Wales.² He died on 3 Nov 1696 at the age of 57 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.² The year of birth for George Thomas is somewhat of a mystery. LDS IGI & Ancestral File records are split between 1639 & 1655. The former year is mentioned in sketches on the Thomas family. The only Boston births recorded for the Thomases are for Jane & Dorcas, thus making George one of the four children born in Wales.
George Thomas was born in Wales about 1639 and arrived in Massachusetts Bay Colony with his parents and three elder siblings in 1640. George married Rebecca Maverick about 1679. The couple had eight children.

                             v.   Ann Thomas was born on 30 Apr 1688 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America.²⁰

              6            vi.   Dorothy Thomas, born 20 Dec 1690, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay, British America; married Thomas Whittemore Jr., ca 1715, Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; married Robert Jennison, abt 1719, Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts; died Auburn, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
